Hi All

I have a new SoundBlaster 128 card with Altec-Lansing AVS 300 Speakers running on an Asus A7V 266-E under Windows XP home. My sound has given occasional, very brief, dense clips of static. It sounds like someone saying "TICK" really fast, and highly pitched. The odd thing is, my video mode appears to affect the sounds quality: in normal windows, the sound is fairly bad. But when running a Direct3D app, the sound increases in quality. I checked for an IRQ conflict between sound and video, and sure enough my sound and video cards shared IRQ 11. I switched my sound card down to IRQ 7 through my BIOS (its a PNP card), but the problem has persisted. I've got the newest drivers I can find for my soundcard and video card, and I've tested the speakers out indenpendently. What could be causing this problem? Greg W

The slot you installed the sound card in may be physically sharing an irq with either the agp slot, or the pci slot you installed the video card in, if its pci. Check your motherboard manual to see which slots share what irq's.

Check to see if your line in on the volume control panel is on. One of my XP machines Does something similar when I mute the Line in it goes away.

go into Dxdiag and turn down the hardware accelcertation in the sound card properties

OK, ive turned down hardware acceleration from dxdiag - from running the tests, it appears that i get less clips in the sound at higher bitrates, but it stays the same across all acceleration levels. I've changed the physical slot of the sound card 3 times now, with no effect. I also turned off the line-in, which helped somewhat, but i still have problems. Any other ideas?

Thanks for the suggestions so far Greg W
