I have two excel workbooks. In one I type the equals sign and then click with the mouse to the other workbook and attempt to click on a cell - but it simply won't let me. There must be something odd about the worksheet - but I have looked at protection to no avail....

Can anyone help ??

Are these workbooks open in the same instance of Excel?

Cheers, Glenn.

Did you hear about the literalist show-jumper? He broke his nose jumping against the clock.

Are you trying to select a cell that has an autofilter or pivottable dropdown arrow on it ??

when you say "it won't let you" - please explain further. Does it let you select the cell but the formula in the other workbook stops being created or can you not physically select the cell ??

Little more explanation of what you are doing, version of excel, exact steps you are taking etc would be helpful..

You can't even click into the cell - clicking has no effect what-so-ever. Version is Excel 2000. You can click into other worksheets within the workbook ok. Very odd indeed...

Very daft solution, but does it let you use your mouse on the vertical scroll bar in the workbook you want to link to? If it does, does it work if you click down a couple of times on the scroll bar before linking to the cell?

This happens to me occasionally and i have no explanation as to why, but I have always found that I can scroll down the target worksheet, click on a cell that is some way away from where I wanted, and then use the keyboard to navigate back to the cell I wanted to target. Hasn't failed yet.

Just to clarify, assume I wanted to select cell A1 and it won't let me, I can scroll to say row 150 or some other meaningless row number and it will then let me select a cell in that row and below. I then select say C150, and then use the arrow keys to get back to cell A1.

Ken...........
