We had a drive fail in one of our Octel 250s (no Global Message Redundancy). An Avaya business partner changed the drive out and the system is back up and running. Now our problem is with the messages that were lost. The mailboxes still reference them, but won't let you delete them. Is there any way to remove these references without deleting the mailbox and recreating it? While it's not a large system, deleting all the mailboxes and rebuilding them is a lot of work.

Thanks.

the vender should have run a garbage collect after the drive was replaced. This will fix the problem but if you run it and there are more than 50 errors it will not let you contiue unless you have the eng bit turned on.

I'll contact the vendor and find out. Hopefully there was less then 50 errors on it, otherwise I'm going to have to start deleting and rebuilding a lot of mailboxes!

Thanks.

no do not do that just get the eng bit turned on if you need help with that let me know

I talked to the vendor and he said it was run successfully. I then tried it myself and it ran fine with the short collect. But errored out with the long one giving an error: Errors reading phrases/phrase table. Garbage Collect abandoned.

Any suggestions? Thanks again.

are you running it on all drives ? and is the eng bit on ?

Also how much disk space is on the system ?

have you run the G collect before, as it sounds like the drive was not updated after they ran the g collect i may be able to help but i need to call the system or speak to you direct

Since my manager handled this issue at first (I was out of town at the time of the drive failure), he didn't fill me in on all the details. The Octel 250 (Aria 2.05.06-1) was originally a 2 drive system. When the second drive failed, it was removed by the vendor and the system reconfigured to be a 1 drive system. So when I ran Garbage Collect, I ran it on drive 0.

I can't find any eng bit on menu 13.7. When I run drive tests, I get control bus errors when it's checking Phrase files. This has me concerned, so I'll go back to the vendor to have this checked into.

Have you ran garbage collect yet. That will get rid of the old message pointers.

Sorry for the delay in getting back, I've been busy installing a PBX and Octel 100 at another site.

Kenmeans, The Octel 250 didn't have a tape backup to restore from (no backups or GMR). For a vendor, we've been using Xeta on this particular problem. Txtom, The short version of the Garbage collect was run and didn't have any errors. The long one aborts (see above message).

Well, the vendor got back to me after talking to an Avaya tech on this issue. Looks like the fix is to find a drive with the same software load (Avaya won't provide one) and install it as a second drive. They would then setup some sort of mirror and copy the non-corrupt phrase table and files to the main drive. Afterwards, the second drive could be removed. At this point, a Garbage Collect can be run to repair the original problem!

So basically, deleting and recreating the mailboxes just became the quickest and definately the cheapest method to resolve this. At least it's a small site. :)

that will not take care of any corrupt phrase files and you will have the same problem

Just for clarification if you delete your users it will not fix the phrase problem on the drive. I don't know what software level your Octel is at but the mater drives with the software and phrases are still available from Avaya. We have had to get a master from time to time and I just looked up the active part numbers for that and they are available. It may be that you vender does not know the Octel very well and just does not know what button's to push.

Bottom line is unless you get the phrases fixed it will just blowup down the road sooner or later. below is the part number and comcode number and it shows as active. there are different numbers for different S/W levels

Aria O MDR-0094-735 MASTER,SW, 02.02.07-1 sub to MDR-0094-835 (408421030) ACTIVE

For now I have to keep my fingers crossed that nothing else happens to it. We are going to start deploying Cisco CM along with their voice mail platform in the near future, so my company won't pay for any major repairs (this site isn't big or important enough to them). They would just assume replace it with one of our spare Octels should it completely die.
