Hi all,

Got a problem with OCS 2007, when i use the office communicator to search a distribution group in ad the group is displayed but when i try to send an IM to the group i get the following windows message:

'Distribution group service could not perform this action. Contact the system admin to investigate'

When i run Web Componants validation i get the following error:
--------------------------------------------------------
URL: Received a failure HTTP response.: HTTP Response: 500 Internal Server Error
Content-Length:3054
Cache-Control:private
Content-Type:text/html; charset=utf-8
Date:Wed, 30 Jul 2008 12:53:16 GMT
Server:Microsoft-IIS/6.0
X-AspNet-Version:2.0.50727
X-Powered-By:ASP.NET

Received a failure HTTP response.: InternalServerError
Suggested Resolution: Check whether the Web Server or Office Communications Server component is running and also listening on the specified url. If server is behind a load balancer, please make sure the loopback connection is allowed from load balancer FQDN.
Suggested Resolution: Check the Web Proxy setting in this machine and ensure that it is correctly configured
--------------------------------------------------------

I have searched on various web forums but can't find any info on '500 internal server error' relating to OCS 2007.

Also the internal URL does not work so it looks like it's a prob with IIS. To try and resolve this i have checked all settings, made 'Network Service' and 'LOCALSERVER\ASPNET' accounts full access to integpub\ and windows\microsoft.NET\framework directories and to the virtual 'GroupExpansion' IIS directory.

none of the above has resolved this problem.

All other features work validate fine:

front end server
web conferecing Server
A/V conference Server

before i roll this out across the network i need to have groupexpansion working.

Can anyone provide any support here?

Many thanks.

Does the download of the address book work OK? Delete the galcontacts.db in your profile and restart communciator. If it comes back, then IIS is working fine. If it doesn't come back, let me know.

Disable any proxy server settings in IE and try to get to the DLX url.

Can you get to that url from other workstations? The server?

It is what it is!!

Hey thanks for quick response. Can't locate the galcontacts.db anywhere in my profile! checked in:

C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Communicator

and ran a search for galcontacts but no results.

No IE proxy settings are configured and i have tried accessing the link from both the local server and two lan workstations, i get the below error

Server Error in '/GroupExpansion/Int' Application.
----------------------------------------------------------
Runtime Error
Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on the local server machine, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "RemoteOnly". To enable the details to be viewable on remote machines, please set "mode" to "Off".

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="RemoteOnly"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>

Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>
----------------------------------------------------------

Try the following.

1) Change the int in the URL to ext and see if you can access the page.

The INT and the EXT directories use different authetication means.

2) Make sure that the application pool is running. Stop and start the LSGroupExpAppPool and test again on both INT and EXT.

Is communicator reporting an error about downloading the address book file?

Can you upload the validation log of the web components server?

It is what it is!!

1) changed the INT to EXT and same error page appears. i am prompted for credentials so i enter domain\user and password of my domain account which is used to login to communicator 2k7.

2) to check the application pool i expanded Standard Edition Server | Servername | servername.domain.co.uk | Applications and could see everything was running. is this the right place. cannot find where to restart the LSGroupExpAppPool!

3) the Communicator client is showing zero errors and can download the addressm, no problems. see validation log below:

#2 - There is a start and stop button on the tool bar when you highlight the application pool. If you getting prompted for authentication, check the following.

1 - Identity of the application pool is RTCComponentService account. Reset the password if it is. Restart application pool.

It is what it is!!

oh ok, got it... the WRTCSnap2.msc that's created during install messed up or got corrupt so had to create a new MMC OCS console. this is why there's no stop and start on the top toolbar, but i can get to it through a right click.

now i need more to go on, what do you mean 'identity of the application pool'?, how do i check this?

i can see the account in AD and have reset the password can't see where to check identity.

thanks

The application pool is in IIS. You would use the IIS Admin console. Distribution List Expansion (DLX) happens using an IIS webpage. Did you put the same certificate on the IIS Default Website as you did the front end?

Application Pools are listed there and you can stop and start them. Right click the one mentioned above and go to properties. There is an identity tab there.

It is what it is!!

ah, ignore that last post.

just found the application pool in IIS, was looking in OCS before.

Ok, in application pool, identity i changed it to domain\RTCComponantService, restarted the service and also restarted all OCS services but i still get the same error when i browse to
and i'm prompted still for login details.

very frustrating.

do you have any other ideas?

yep, same certificate used on default website as the frontend server.

At this point, without actually being on the server, your choices are limited.

I am assuming this is a standard edition server
1) Deactivate web conferencing server
2) Deactivate Web Componenets
3) Replciate your domain
4) Remove the APP Pool in IIS and all directories under the default website.
5) Either run setup again and re-activate Web COnf and Web Comp or activate them using the LCSCMD.

It is a pain, but should work.

It is what it is!!

It is what it is!!
