Ocraware has caused an error in MMSYSTEM.DLL

I first got the above message several days after installing a USB scanner (I assume ocraware is something to do with optical character recognition) into my new Gateway USB computer. On boot-up I get no mouse and a 16-colour screen on 600 x 840. It is possible to change these settings in the control panel but they are not permanent. It is not possible to uninstall / reinstall the mouse. This error occurs in Windows ME but I have seen a very similar problem on a 98SE computer very recently.

Time to update the video card drivers. Also check your motherboard (Gateway) for updated USB drivers. Cheers,

I have 'solved' the ME part of this problem by using the system restore facility. But I've just been told by 'RoyT' (who's stood next to me) that USB scanners have a problem and to check the knowledge base.

That's what I was reffering to about the updated USB drivers. I'd hunt around Gateway, as well as your scanner mfg for any FAQ's about your particular scanner.
Personally, I'd return the scanner, and get a SCSI port one. They're faster and more reliable than USB (or parallel). Cheers,

Thanks Jim, I've got a USB only Gateway computer though. Time has been a great healer on this one i.e. I had time over Christmas to solve it. It turns out that OCRAWARE is not some exotic sort of 'ware' but stands for O.C.R. Aware from Omnipage software. I re-installed the scanner software completely and removed the OCRAWARE shortcut from the startup process et voila, no (fingers crossed) problems.
