Dear All,

A former Oracle 8i install left the ORI.DLL behind which I cannot delete. When trying to install Oracle 9i over it all I am getting is the error that the file cannot be accessed and if I choose to ignore that then the installation finally fails.

Is there a way to "unregister" the existing DLL prior to the new install?

Thanks.
Roland

I've found that Oracle installs on Windows servers are frequently plagued by problems overwriting existing dll's. Is that what you're talking about? Usually this problem can be fixed by renaming the dll and clicking retry in OUI. If all else fails, set all Oracle services to manual startup and reboot the server, then retry the install. The reboot prevents locks from being acquired on the dlls and allows the installation to proceed.

I suppose that you have not uninstalled your previous Oracle incorrectly. To remove it completely all services should have been stopped first. And of course, installing a new version into existing home of not yet removed older one is not a good idea.

Regards, Dima

I was relying on the Universal Installer to stop and remove the services (left behind by 8i). That must be the problem then!
Tonight, I'll check once more and retry the install.

Thanks again.

The reinstall fixed the problem!

Thank you all and Merry Christmas!!!
