NZ function working with some fields and not others 1

In the detail segment of a report, I am using the NZ function to generate 0 when the field is actually null. Lo and behold, I am getting some results as #errors while other display correctly...duh! My assumption is to create the text box and write =NZ([fieldname]). Am I missing something?

Try =NZ([fieldname],0)

Also, make sure the name of the control is not also the name of the field.
