Hello; I'm planning a server upgrade and would like some input as to the best way to go about this.. Here's what I would like to do..

Install the new server hardware and NW6.5 OS, create the 10 or so user accounts manually on the new box.. Connect into both servers with a local workstation and just copy the user data directory's from the old server to new server which should only be about 8g's worth of data. Once the copy is done setup the rights to the user folders and any groups from the old server..

Thanks for your help..Scott

Hi,

The Migration Wizard is the way to go. Migrate the data and the Trustee Assignments, Edit the Configuration files and skip the NDS migration portion.

FYI
In case you have any issues, you can migrate the Volume(s) as many times as needed.

Thanks for your input......

However I'm a little nervous running the migration wizard, in other upgrades in the past I always seem to have lots of problems getting the initial server to server connections to work for one reason or another... Since this is a single server with only around 10 users and a small amount of data to transfer wouldn't it just be easier to setup everything from scratch on the new 6.5 server then copy in the data folders and assign the user rights to these folders.. What am I missing here, what does the migration wizard do for me that will make it worth the potential problems I always seem to have with it..

Thanks..Scott

It will set-up all users and permissions the same way you have now without you having to remember every single bit of how they are configured now, who has access to what.

It will also set-up all your printers, but you may wish to dump this and use NPDS instead.

and other things but you may not need them.

I have used it also on small (5-10) users networks, without any problem. (but from 4 to 5/6 and from 5 to 6, never from 3 to any of the others, so I don't know if those worked well. May not be your case)

There's really a lot of ways you could do this. What is best for some might not be that great for others. In your case, you could do the Migration Wizard, but for 10 users, is it really worth it.. Might be easier to just copy the data and do things manually like you mentioned.

The plus side of the migration wizard, is that when all is said and done, you still have your original tree in tact and your end users are not effected. In other words, you don't have to go and change the tree/context/server settings on all your workstations. And if the trustee assignments transfer correctly (I've had limited success in this category), then they should be able to login and not even know there was a change to the server.

If you don't want to do the migration wizard, AND you want to do a tree to tree move of your data and stuff, another option is the Server Consolidation Utility. It's similar to the migration wizard in how it can copy / move files and permissions, but it doesn't do the NDS swap etc. It's really just a tool to move data and a few other things to another server and/or tree.

Another option is just adding the NW6.5 server to the NW4.x tree. Nothing wrong with that, and you'd keep your tree structure and only have to deal with moving the files and printers to the new server. You may have to deal with some NDS issues, but nothing too complicated.

George, GroupWise is just an application running on the server..Basically just a big database sitting on your volumes. Nothing more complicated than any other application. Just make sure you get everything copied and/or moved and that you make the necessary path changes in ConsoleOne. The GW 6.5 Install is also a separate installation, even with the Small Business Suite software. I like to do it in 2 steps.

Step 1) Migrate Server to new Netware 6.5 box
Step 2) Upgrade GroupWise to GW6.5

That's true.. But if you keep your original tree in tact, it's no big deal at all. Nothing happens to the objects, they stay the same.

Maybe someone else that has good experience grafting GW objects could expand on this next point, but if you try to move it (GROUPWISE) to a whole new tree at the same time you move the server, then you have to somehow get all the groupwise objects into the new tree. To me, that is a hassle and carries a lot of extra risk. That is why I don't do it. I Always keep the tree.

Keep the tree, migrate the data.

just fwiw.. I used the server consolidation utility to move files (within the same tree) when we were upgrading to 6.5 and it is a *lot* faster than just copying them. We moved about 100GB of data, and I got transfer rates north of 13MB/sec on a 100Mb switched lan, and again, you keep all trustee assignments etc. Why make more work for yourself? You can run it over and over (for deltas) so run it a few days before the move off hours, and then the day of you run it again so it runs very quickly. It's sweet.
FWIW #2 I would add the 6.5 server to the existing tree as well. One of Netware's big points (IMHO) has historically been the lack of 'rip and replace' needed. Take advantage of it.

Itsmyfault made a key point here that needs to be emphasized..

Rip and Replace is a standard practice when working with Windows upgrades. For netware, it's totally not necessary. Whether you do an inplace upgrade, migration, or whatever, it's much easier than starting over the "windows way". NetWare people understand this. Windows people don't.

What is the differnece between:
Upgrade Migration Tool
Server Consolidation Tool

Thanks
George

My Goal is to move GW 5 to a new NW 65 SBS/GW65 server,
leaving the files and printers on the existing 5.0 server.

Will this work?
