Hey guys and thanks in advance - as you know I'm new to this; I have a tape library that I've been backing up to successfully now for a few weeks and it's working great. My question is, I've been told to test backup and restore from the SAN to tape library - now in my libraries/devices I see my tape library, but how do I configure Legato to see the SAN? (I can ping the SAN)

If you talk about a SAN attached device, it simply appears like any other device. Just configure it as usual.

If it is attached to a remote storage node, you must add the header - the full devicename should read like "rd=hostname:device".

You've actually addressed both issues but the second I didn't even mention - good insight!
At Site1 I have NWServer/Storage Node that the tape library is on and functioning perfectly, Site 1 also has a SAN that I'd like to backup from (and restore to) from the NWServer console. How do I configure NWServer in Site1 to see the SAN?

Second issue was, once configured to backup to the SAN in Site1, at Site2, I only have a Storage Node that has it's own tape library that I'd like to be able to control from Site1. How do I install the remote Storage Node in Site2 to appear in Site1?

I still do not fully understand what you mean by 'SAN'. I also think that you mean the NetWorker User GUI if you talk about the 'NWserver console' as the NetWorker Admin GUI does not allow client initiated processes as backup and restore.

If this is true, then simply mount the SAN attached disk to a client so that it can be seen as a standard local disk. Then use the NW User GUI as usual for backups and recoveries of this client.

The second configuration looks like you use a SAN attached disk as a backup device. If you want to do that, you must define the remote device as described.

You should not use a client disk as a NW backup device as well. However, if you want to use a SAN device for more than one storage node, just setup a DDS (Dynamic Drive Sharing) environment. The only difference is that you must specify the Hardware ID along with the device name. Unfortunately you must use nsradmin for this purpose as the new admin GUI does not allow this (the Hardware ID field is greyed out).

Ok, I tried configuring the SN in Site2, and it appeared to work (the install/jbconfig that is)... Yet on the NW Server in Site1, I can't get past inventory of the library in Site2, I right-click and select Inventory and it starts the attempt but in Operations section of Console:

cancellation: none;

In Log section of Console:

Googling this message produces no results so I'm not sure where to start here..

Did you install the SN software on that host?
Is nsrexecd running on the SN?

Might be that the daemon.log on the SN could tell you more.

Yes, SN software is installed on host and nsrexecd is running on the SN. I looked on the SN for the log but only located the cryptic daemon.raw.

Then use nsr_render_log to format the output.

Afer removing the SN from the NWS, and running jbconfig on the SN in Site2 (rap05c) again:

Jbconfig is running on .....omitted for space..
The following drive(s) can be auto-configured in this jukebox:
1> LTO Ultrium-3 @ 7.0.0 ==> \\.\Tape0
2> LTO Ultrium-3 @ 7.1.0 ==> \\.\Tape1
These are all the drives that this jukebox has reported.

To change the drive model(s) or configure them as shared or NDMP drives,
you need to bypass auto-configure. Bypass auto-configure? (yes / no) [no] n

Jukebox has been added successfully

The following configuration options have been set:

> Jukebox description to the control port and model.
> Autochanger control port to the port at which we found it.
> Autocleaning off.
> Barcode reading to on.
> Volume labels that match the barcodes.

You can review and change the characteristics of the autochanger and its
associated devices using the NetWorker Management Console.

Would you like to configure another jukebox? (yes/no) [no]n

I then went back on the NWS to configure the new SN in the library, which appeared to work fine. Yet even though I could now see the tapes that are in the jukebox, when I went to inventory those tapes in Tape0 (it takes becuase I see the entry nsrd [Jukebox `rd=rap05c:ClassPA', operation 13]. Initiated operation `operation: "Inventory"; operation slots: "1-120"; '., I keep seeing the message in the log section in the console:

nsrmmgd Jukebox `rd=rap05c:ClassPA' is unavailable. nsrlcpd is not running for this jukebox

:-(

So, for grins, I edited the servers file in a client in Site2 (rap01c), to include the NWS in it (rap05h, it already has it's SN already in it), and on the NWS I created a TestGroup to include only the client in it and tried to run it, after it started, I saw these last few entries in the daemon.raw on the NWS:

nsrd savegroup info: starting TestGroup (with 1 client(s))

......Hmmm, I'm confused, what is the problem???

It seems that you have 2 problems:
- a jukebox related problem (don't know why nsrlcpd is not started)
- a 'network related' problem (most likely DNS)
If the probe can not succeed, a backup of a remote host can not work.
They might even be associated.

My suggestions:
- Correct your name resolution problem
- Run a client-initiated backup first as this is a prerequisite for the automatic backup
- If this works, run an automatic backup
- Address the jukebox problems later
