Hi all

This is probably something obvious. I uninstalled the old drivers and tried to install the latest. The nvidia setup screen comes up and tells me that vista is performing a hardware update and do I want to wait. I kept this running for an hour and a half and it still didn't do anything. In hardware I can see a VGA card with the yellow exclamation mark and try to install the drivers there. It comes back with error code 1.

I've tried aiming at earlier drivers same result.

Any ideas please.

Many thanks Eddie

You could try un-installing the VGA card from the hardware list. Reboot the machine & see if it will automatically install the drivers.

Is System Restore an option, or even Driver Rollback? You could try System Restore from Safe Mode if it doesn't work in Normal Mode.

Are you sure that you are installing the correct Driver for your machine and operating system? Did you get the Driver from Nvidia (recommended) or Windows Update (not recommended)?

What was wrong in the first place to make you consider updating Drivers?

Not sure if this stands true for 8800 model but there should be no reason to update nividia drivers on your own.

I get all mine through windows update on my nividia and haven't had an issue yet.

I have the NVIDIA 8800 GTX and you have to have the lasted drivers so directx 10 works correctly
ForceWare Release 163
the Microsoft update for the nvidia cards is a frustrating endeavor as sometimes the driver is not the latest nvidia release. I just don't do the nvidia update through Microsoft anymore because I had issues playing some of the directx 10 games. if I used the drivers provided by Microsoft the games crashed... this version of forceware has brought some stability..though BioSphere still runs better in directx 9 mode...
don't get me started on Nvidia and their drivers....it would be nice to have one stable release that doesn't cause some type of issue.
as for the vista hanging on the install you have to run setup as administrator for the install to work as it is installing system files. it sounds like your User Account Control is turned off or not asking to run the setup and that may be the hangup.
try TweakUAC

that may help

Hi All

To fix it I started in safe mode and the machine said there where new drivers available, I think .69 and installed them no problem. Very strange all working fine again. The other problem is trying the restore from role back it comes up with that error message 0x**343 I think and says it is unable to load the retore, try again. It also does this when you try to create a restore point but seems OK when Microsoft update loads new stuff and creates a resore point. I checked on the web and I couldn't find anything to fix this. I've now gone nutty and updated my X-FI extreme audio drivers and loaded creative alcamy......no doubt I'll be back when they blow up...I'm really beging to hate VISTA.

Thanks for you suggestions. Eddie

My Vista is working stable now tnat I don't allow the auto update to update my drivers. My audio drivers are the exception because the soundmax drivers suck from the manufacturer.
other than that all is serene and placid....till the next updates

LOL

System Restore might come good if you just turn it off in Control Panel\System\System Protection. Reboot and turn it back on?

You might check the Event Viewer too.
