Numeric key pad lock on at startup 1

When XP Pro starts up, the numeric key pad lock is on by default. I prefer this on my desktop machine, but on laptops and tablets it is a nuisance because the logon password is affected by it.

How can I change the default setting on the portable machines (without a separate numeric keypad) so that it boots to "pad lock off?"

Check CMOS, there's usually a numlock setting there.

I try not to let my ignorance prevent me from offering a strong opinion.
 
You can pick and choose. The issue is that it preserves the status of the last user.

You need to intervene in the logon or startup script, (or the similar facilities available through Scheduled Tasks) to script the state that you desire.
