I would like to add autonumbering with chapters and paragraphs, BUT, at the end of a line.
somethig like this
First Chapter 1
first paragraph 1.1
second paragraph 1.2
Second Chapter 2

Of course I do use different paragraph styles for both chapter and paragraph.

How do i do this?

I thought of adding variables on an invisible layer, but that didn't work.
.....is there a simple way to organize this?

Thanks for the help.

Maarten

Certainly, it's very easy to set up.

In the paragraph numbering section of the paragraph styles.

Insert "Chapter" before the number

Also you need to define lists and numbered lists. And for the numbers like 1.2 etc. you need to make the number styles to be at level 2.

If you can wait till tomorrow I can send you a sample file of work that I've done using numbered paragraphs.

I have more on my blog about numbering paragraphs, which the link is provided below.

See this screen shot

Thanks Eugene, I can certainly wait until tomorrow.

Me myself, I have a poor sensitivity for 'variable' stuff etc.
However you seem to have a grasp of this subject matter.
It somehow is a little to abstract sometimes for me.
But I am willing to master it!

Thank You Eugene.
For all the effort and clear documentation on your blog.
Most effective and efficient way of working.

1. Additionally I would like to have the figures 1.2.2 etc behind the text subheading, on the right side of the column.
Is that also possible?

2. I am also looking for a simple and clear example of placing anchored objects. i.e. pictures and captions on a certain position under the images. The images sometimes inbetween the text column and sometimes aside of the text column, however always following and running with the text.

Any idea where I can find a clear example and explanation of this functionality?

* the settings window for objects and anchoring is rather unclaer to me and rather complex to understand.

Thank you.
Maarten

I will make a donation for your help.

Well the figures, you simply define a new list for your paragraph style for your figures. Using the samples I have given you should be able to do it, set the level that is on the right side to 3 then remove the ^H as that refers to the chapter number, and insert the appropriate amount of levels.

And Maarten, I don't know of a place that delves into Anchoring objects, but I will write up something for my blog in the next couple of days for you.

It's a little bit tricky using anchored objects, but once you get the basic understanding it will be very simple.

Basically, you anchor your object, by cutting it and using the text insertion at the text point to paste the object in. Then it's anchored. Next you need to set the options, so with the object still selected (select with the direct select tool if you have deselected) then go to Object>Anchored Object>options and set to Manual at the top.

Then say ok and simply move the object into position. At this point with the object still selected create a new OBJECT STYLE and select the style for this object.

Now when you anchor another object you can use that style and it will position it for you.

But the whole control panel, I will write up a tutorial on how to use anchored objects, but it may take a few days.

Who knows... I may even have enough for a book after all this :)

Thanks again Eugene,

I'll be looking forward to your blog items coming up on the anchor stuff.

And about the book: there will certainly be a market for it since official Adobe CiaB's and other major books do not cover the in depths know how's and know how to's.
So I would suggest to proceed with it.

Hopefully CS4 will give us much much better table technology, this item is done incorrect as far as I can judge. Simply imporing and formatting a table from Word or Excel gives many problems. They can do this better.

Thank you.

Hi Eugene,

Concerning the numbering: it works fine now, only one step to go:
I want to have my numbers within the text column on different sides at the left and right pages.
At the left pages I have a body text (full page width) with the text left and the numbering on the right (right alined).
At the right page the numbering is left alined on the left and the body text comes next to it, within one style.

Is this possible to arrange?

see for image:

Hey Maarten,

Can you send me a file so I can see how you are setup.

Looking at the screenshot it's not obvious how it could be done. But perhaps if I see your file setup it would give me an idea on how you could proceed.

I think it would be done somehow with variables, but I'm not entirely sure how yet.

Eugene

Hi Eugene,

Did you have the occasion to look further on the item of having paragraph numbers next to the text, but on the right page on the right side of the text alinea?
This as mentioned in a file that I sent you earlier

Thanks, Maarten

Hi Eugene,

Thanks for the extensive and helpful mail about paragraph numbering off-side.

However in my document the relation to the spine can be made on a spread-icon; but in practice there is only one side that works properly: so the anchored number(object) does not swith from sides on odd/even pages.
No swapping with this object style...
What can I have done not right? Any idea?
My settings look exactly the same as yours.
Shall I email my file for inspection?

Thanks, Maarten

Additional note:

I have found the problem with the swapping item!
As long as you have no spread defined, but single pages for left and right following each other, ID doesn't see a spine.
So after activating the spread in 'doc props', the swapping is now real active.

As a user I would prefer a more userfriendly and less elaborative solution for this item from Adobe.

Thanks for your help again Eugene!

Maarten

Too quick again....it is not working completely!

The swapping works, but on the left page I want the text to be left aligned and on the right side right alined.
And that doesn't work yet.

I will email you the small file.

Thanks, Maarten
