Hi Experts

My system is windows xp home ed.

I have just restored my pc with Norton Ghost Images.
But I had big problems when I got this error again
and again.

Ntldr is missing

I DID try copying the ntldr and the ntdetect.com and
fixmbr c: and fixboot c: and it did not work...

Secondly I also tried repairing but the option was not
there during the windows xp installation.....

I then fixed it by formating / deleting the whole harddisk.
Then reinstalling windows xp home ed. from scratch.
Then restoring my folders one by one in windows (not in
dos as I did try and gave me all these errors)

Best Regards

ok this one I did not try. This error came after restoring
my Norton Ghost Image........

Did it fix the problem for you then?

I'm very sorry, i believe i googled wrong.
The one i gave you refers to win xp install over existing os's like win 98 etc, unless that applies to you, probably not?

To start, heres some info that might apply:

As for me running into that prob, i did, but i am getting old and my meds cause memory loss, not a joke either!
So i cant quite recall and because of that i keep notes. I will see if i cant find them.

I now you mentioned you did this but this may be a bit different:

NTLDR missing? Easy to fix.

Ask someone who has a PC that is up and running with the same OS as you.
Then go to your system folder and copy the Ntldr(dot)exe, boot(dot)ini, and NTDETECT(dot)COM files onto a floppy.

Boot from your floppy.

I got it from:

garebo > your link got 404 error and your other one is for
windows 2000 I have windows xp home ed.

Which link got the 404 error?
The one for win 2000, i believe it says it applies to win xp as well.

I havent received any errors on any of the links and i tried them all. Anyway, as i said, the one for win2000 is for win2k and win xp as well.
The msoft links work fine too, least for me, right from here.

Guess i make too many posts, will calm down, lol.

What i did originally was simply google it:

From there you can access all the items i posted. I went thru it and posted hopefully relevant items.
I still cant find the file i made when same thing happened to me. But i do remember it was a microsoft page that gave me the answer to my prob.

highly unsafe to use them on the xp too...

If you are talking about this link:

It specifically points out:
Win2000 Ntldr Is Missing
NTLDR is missing
Press any key to restart

Your system is running Windows 2000 or WinXP on a FAT 32 Partition

This is a rough draft. Rename Ultra.sys to Ntbootdd.sys for Promise ATA/100 Controller.

As one User recently pointed out, "Make sure there is no floppy in the floppy drive if your system is set to boot from a floppy!"

Problem: If the active partition does not contain the Windows boot files (ntldr, NTDETECT.COM & boot.ini) or boot files for another operating system (Win98SE on FAT32 active partition), your system will not boot but instead be caught in an endless repetitive loop. HD is probably OK but the O/S may have lost it's Boot Partition Files.

So it does point out that it is for win2k and wink xp.
I am not saying it will or wont work, only saying it seems to apply to win2k and win xp.
I could point out that i have done lots of fixes that apply to both win2k and win xp, again not saying this one will work or not, i dont know for certain.

Hi again

Just found out something:

The

ntldr
ntdetect.com
boot.ini files

are NOT in the root of the Ghost image with my system(windows)on.

HOWEVER they ARE in the root of another Ghost image which
I did NOT use in this process.

So maybe I should have copied these files to another
partition.

You see my old windows xp (in the image) was on the E
partition and NOT on the C partition like normal.
So when I have been trying to copy these files to the
C partition I should have copied them to the E partition
instead right ?

Could very well be!

You will see others mention above putting their os on another drive other than c: and some people say its ok, other suggest problems down the road (like me). For one thing, some progs like adobe products will only go on the c drive and wont install anywhere else.
Then, as in your case, its hard to remember what you need to remember when you need to remember it, even though you think you will. Been there, done that.
Rant over.

guess you will have to do this all over again then?
Let us know the results.

well now my windows xp is fine. So therefore I will take
a new backup of it and now windows is on my C partition
again plus I have the important files in my C root now..

Just to add to aftertaf's comment: XP distinguishes between the boot partition (which is whatever partition was marked as the Active partition0, the System partition (which contains XP), and all other partitions whether physical or logical.

The NTLDR and friends must be on the partition that is marked as Active.

thx...
i was at the end of a long day...
or the start of a long morning, can't remember which... (figures... :) )
