I have just installed a new 80gig drive and started my computer. When it starts, it asked me if I want to boot from the CD. I answer yes to boot from the full version CD of XP Pro. The next thing I get is an error saying NTLDR is missing and the computer stops responding. I have never run into this on a new install on a blank drive. Should I format the drive first or let the install do it? Any other suggestions?

You shouldn't be getting a yes & no prompt. When I boot with the XP CD, a prompt appears immediately after the system POST test screen disappears. The prompt says to hit any key to boot from the CD. Is that what you are seeing and doing?

If so, then that's strange since the CD doesn't require that you have anything on the hard drive.

Just to be certain, you're not using startup floppy diskettes are you?

Correct - it is a hit any key - sorry meant I had a choice to boot from Cd or not.

Not booting from Disk - just the full version of XP Pro CD. I have never seen this on any install I have done.

Yeah, well I would agree with you then to go ahead and format it first. If that still doesn't help, go ahead and copy NTLDR to the root of the boot partition. If it still complains, who knows...

Try the CD in another system real quick to make sure it's not damaged (even though it's worked in the past).
