I have a problem. I tried installing Win 2K on a drive (3Gb) before reading the FAQ's and threads here (oh dear), and have ended up with a dual boot system on NTFS (Win 98-2000), and consequently with only a few Mb of disk space left. I only wanted Windows 2000 :(

Of course, now I cannot format the drive from DOS. I am going to make a set of W2K boot discs as Butchrecon recommends. Does anyone know of tools included in the boot discs that I can use to format an NTFS drive please?

Also what is the best way to do it, would Partition Magic be more helpful?

All ideas gratefully accepted

Do you want only one partition and only Win2000? If so you can remove ALL partitions and with a Windows 98 boot disk. Also booting to a WIn2K CD will allow you to delete and create new partitions. James Collins

Thank you, yes I only need one partition and that to be 2000.

I have a 98 boot disc, and the 2000 CD. I did try formatting using the format command in DOS using the 98 floppy, but the file system is already NTFS - I can also boot from the 2000 CD.

If you could tell me how to remove the partitions and operating system (98) whilst in Windows 2000 or from the 98 boot floppy, or maybe point me towards some information that would be really helpful.

Am now installing 2000 on another identical machine, but you can be sure I defragmented, fdisked and formatted it first this time!

Many thanks Kathy

copy fdisk from a 98 pc to the 98 floppy.

boot to the floppy and use fdisk to destroy the partitions.

now having created the 4 bootdicks with makeboot you should be able to boot the pc from the floppies and you will be installing win 2k
note you will be forced to format the drive during installation, and you can tell the installation that you want ntfs.

you can format the drives from the win2k installation if you boot from the cd. Just delete all partitions and create one new partition.

Thanks, I hadn't realised it was that simple.
