Whenever I try to upgrade to SP4 I get an error message that ntevt.dll is open or in use. Please close the application and retry. I've tried it in safe mode with nothing running and get the same error. I've tried reinstalling SP3 to see if it's corrupt but get the same error when I try SP3. Any ideas?

At what point during the upgrade does this happen? Have you scanned for virus and spyware to rule out some malware affecting this library file?

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

It happens before any files are actually installed. Sometime while it's backing up existing files I think. I'll have to try it again and get the exact time it happens.

Okay, I've checked to see where the error actually happens. It extracts the files. I hit next, I agree, and do not archive and then clicked next. It starts inspecting the files and then gives me the error:

The file c:\winnt\servicepackfiles\i386\ntevt.dll is open or in use by another application.

Close all other applications and then click Retry.

I've tried it with every other application closed. I've tried it in safe mode logged on the network. I've tried it in safe mode logged on to the local machine as the administrator. I get the same error in the same spot trying to install SP4 or SP3. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The directory c:\winnt\servicepackfiles\i386, is this where the service pack files were decompressed too? Try moving that i386 folder someplace else on your hard disk, redownload SP4, and try again.

Same error in a different file. Corporate helpdesk has asked that I pull the machine and reload it. Already swapped the user with a pool one we had ready. Thanks for the suggestions.
