Im having real problems with NTBackup.

I have no media listed and the "State" of the backup drive in Computer Management is always reading as "empty" even when there is a tape loaded.

Under the media pools (free, import and unrecognized) there is also no mention of 4mm DDS - only CD-ROM.

When I try to create a new media pool I get the error "The media pool identifier does not represent a valid media pool"

Anyone any ideas?!

What backup device do you have installed? If it is a tape drive, is the right driver installed for this tape device?
Is RSM (Remote Storage) currently running as a service in Windows?
Has this every worked correctly?

I have a HP C1537A SCSI tape drive installed. The correct Win2k driver is definately installed - it has previously worked fine! The Remote Storage Engine, RS File, RS Media and RS Notification services are all running....

It hasnt always been opertional as such - I have always got the "operation not performed because no unused media was available" error.

Many thanks

Did the problem start after changing the media for the first time? Check out this Microsoft document:

Scheduled Backups Fail on Standalone Tape Drives After Changing Media (Q267574)

Thanks for that...Ive been looking through it over the past few days....the problem I'm having now DIDNT first appear when I changed media.

No media is appering anymore....it appears as though the RSM is not refreshing...I have tried commands such as rsm refresh /lf:"hp......" but that still doesnt pick up any media. The state of the drive always says empty even when there is media inserted. I do not think that there is a media pool for 4mmDDS set up...but when I try to create one I get the error "the media pool identifier does not represent a valid media pool"

...When I try to eject the media I am told there is no media in the drive - even though there is!

Looks like there is a known issue with Windows 2000 and some HP 4mm DAT products...
See this document = Hewlett-Packard SureStore Tape Drive May Not Work on Computers with Large Amounts of Memory (Q269600)
And another source I found says the Windows 2000 native Backup does not work correctly with the HP DAT24...
Solution: Need Backup software, such as Veritas Backup Exec.

Its started to work again which is very strange...now going through KB Q239892.

Thanks for all your help.
