What happens when you have a winnt 4.0 domain with one nt4.0 pdc then you add a win2k server as a member server and you promote the win2k server to pdc. What happens to the nt 4.0 PDC ? What does is act as? BDC? Pdc?

Also the winnt40 pdc is an exchange and fax server... will this cuase any problems??

In an NT domain, if you promote the BDC to PDC, then the PDC demotes to a BDC. If you promte a 2K member server to DC status you in a sense create a new and seperate domain, other than the NT domain. That said, in your case I would do the following, replicate before doing this, 2K is used for to identify new computer):

1. Promote the BDC to PDC, thus demoting the current PDC to BDC status
2. Promote the new NT PDC to 2K
3. Promote the 2K member server to 2K DC status
4. Promote the NT BDC with Ex. to 2K (or leave it up to you, if you do promo it make sure you have Exchange with SP3 installed)

If your NT servers can't handle 2K then do the following:

1. Promote the 2K member server to BDC (basically install NT on it and make it a BDC, (2K is used for identity))
2. Take the NT BDC offline for backup purposes
3. Promote the (2K) BDC to PDC, thus demoting the current NT PDC to NT BDC status
4. Promote the new (2K) NT PDC to 2K
5. Leave your NT BDC's as is....

I hope that answers your question.

Well im still a lil confused. I have only one nt40 server and it is a pdc, and exchange box. And then i have one win2k server which is a member of the nt40 domain. There are no other servers or bdc's in place . And i cannot reinstall nt on the 2k server because it is already configured and is file server. I recently took over this place and I am not very happy with the setup.

Can i still promote the win2k server to PDC in NT 40 and have my real nt40 become a bdc?

Sorry Almorga, I misread both your posts. I thought you had indicated that you had a BDC. To answer your question, no.

You are between a rock and a hard place. The 2K server on an NT Domain will want to create a new domain. I would backup my files on the 2K server. Install NT, go through the upgrade procedures and restore the files you want shared on the 2K server. Leave the exchange (now BDC after upgrades) as is or promote that too.

What if i add a new server as a BDC and then promote it to PDC ? therefore making my exchange PDC a BDC ? This will leave my WIN2k untouched.

What do you think??

Yes this would work, in a sense thats what I was explaining to do but didn't know you had a 3rd server to do this with.

"Can I after above Upgrade the 4.0 domain to 2k?"

Yes. Promote the NT PDC then your 2K server to DC. Your ech. BDC can exsist on the 2K network as is. If you want to make it a 2K server also, make sure you have SP3 for Exchange 5.5 installed.

When you say "promote" do you mean upgrade the 4.0 server to win2k?
