my compay have NT4 sp5 server
some time the server can not work and need reboot the server , so in the Event Viewer log , has follow Error :
Event ID : 8003
Description :
The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer (user computer) that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_EI90x4. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forces.

It sounds as if another PC is forcing an election. This election is hosing the Server. However since this error is on the NT4 server the System forcing the election has to be another NT4 server or a Windows 2000 server. Are there any other NT4 ot W2K servers on the network? James Collins

generally i do not worry about this, cause if your network has windows machines on it, one will be the master browser, most likely the pdc then bdc, but sometimes you get the odd machine that likes to think it can be the master browser too but PDC just takes back over after a while. however, if pdc or master browser fails, something is gonna take over master browser list, they all like to fight for the position. i can't remember where one does this, but there is somehow to set on machines to disable being able to act like master browser. but like i said, i don't worry about.

Pyrowe, you would be correct in most cases. However here he states that this server gets locked up and he has to reboot. Any ideas why it would lock the server up? Forcing an election should not lock up a server. James Collins

i agree with you, i don't think i have ever known a server to lock up because of the master browser forcing elections, maybe run a diagnostics on hardware, maybe network card is a little faulty. but i just don't think that the issue is with browser election issue, but then again, nothing surprises me when it comes to server software. possibly try reinstalling current service pack, or maybe going to newer 6a one. i get suspicious of hardware failure when server just freezes...

I agree.

What are the system specs and SP level? James Collins

but i don't kown why ? the server sometime no problem from at few month but sometime at few day will has problem
think you

If your System event log receives Event ID 8003 from Source Rdr from your BDC which believes it is the master browser on transport NetBT_xxxxx, you may have a router that is forwarding UDP broadcasts.

In Windows NT, each subnet will have a master browser. If the router(s) forward UDP broadcasts up to UDP ports 137 and 138, then the election broadcasts from one subnet are being forwarded to other subnets.

Bridges or switches between two dissimilar network segments within the same subnet can also cause this problem.

Make sure your router(s) are not forwarding UDP broadcasts and enable WINS or lmhosts for netbios name resolution.

NOTE: Switches configured for VLAN's (virtual segmentation) have to be configured on a per VLAN basis to prevent UDP broadcast propagation.

We have exactly the same problem.
I don't think this is a regular browser election, because we don't have subnet and when the problem happen, the BDC server was locked out of the network( you can not ping other machine and you can not ping this server). So you have to reboot the server.
We tried SP6a, it wouldn't fix.
So anybody has any idea??

First of all you need to find what device is trying to become a master browser. You should see that in Event Viewer. The 8003 Master Browser message will give you the computer name that is doing this. You then have to go to this workstation and resolve it there. This happened to me in my past job where users would setup their Windows95/Windows98 workstation (I don't believe this happens on NT/2000) to enable File and Print Sharing. When you go to the properties for file and print sharing (You have to display network properties to get here)you will see by default there is a setting called "Master Browser" that is set by default as "Automatic". This would have to be changed to "Disable" and then this workstation will stop trying to become a master browser. Now this is for Windows95/98 machines. There is an article related to the master browser for NT/2000 workstations. This link actually will show you a couple of articles relating to 8003 errors

Hope this helps.

check around for linux or samba servers... some configurations do what is described... alas, MS cannot protect us from everything... ;-) JTB
