NT 4.0 Workstation SP6: if I shutdown the machine, I do not get the usual "OK to power off" dialog; instead, the computer automatically reboots! Any ideas?
I've not seen this.
Some questions: Is it a PC or laptop? Is there any power management or other strange software running? Is it the same from both the Start menu and ctrl-alt-del?
Have you checked the power management settings in the BIOS as well as the NT settings? -----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"

Just to be sure, I disabled the power settings in the BIOS. I also tried Ctrl-Alt-Del method once more: I am presented with 3 choices (shutdown, shutdown/restart, shutdown/power off), and when I pick the last one, I get the reboot.
MS made NT able to auto shutdown, but cannot do it since nothing can access the machines hareware directly, DOH. there is a Registry setting that causes the machine to reboot instead of offering Shutdown screen. It is \PowerDownAfterShutdown\. Have someone who is very familiar with the registry help you with this. It needs to be changed to a '0' or delete the key.*IMPORTANT, BACK-UP!*
When using the shutdown/restart option, the system just hangs with the NT Workstation logo and never shuts down or restarts. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem?
Just throwing this out there, I may me mistaken but I seem to remember an option while installing NT 4 or 2k asking if you want the computer to truly shutdown when selecting 'shutdown' or to restart when you select the 'shutdown' option.
Perhaps when the computer had the OS installed, this option was selected?
