NT server with NT and XP Pro workstations

Hello

Having problems with some users when they log ontot he network. On an NT machine, they are fine. On a XP pro machine, it fails to find the server copy of their roaming profile and attempts to log them on with their local. If they do not have a local profile, they are then logged on as temps.

This unfortunatley does not happen to everbody, some users are successful on both machines and other are not.

well i think ill stick with 2k stations with my nt server at the mo then, i had planned to rebuld all my stations to xp pro next month, i wont untill i see that it goes as smooth as a......whatever. sorry this wasnt any help, but any answer on the above question would help

Just a thought, have you tried creating them a new roaming profile? XP may not like the old NT4 profile, thus it creates a local/temp one. MCSE NT4/W2K

Solution is...Replace permissions on her roaming profile folder while logged on as admin on an NT box. I was doing all my work from an XP box. As soon as I did this, she logged on with no problems.

Our office is going to be switching to a hybrid of XPpro workstations and NT workstations soon. We currently have an NT server. We are switching to a CAD package that is built for XP. All the CAD workstations will be new computers with XPpro on them. All the admin workstations will continue to be NT.

If someone could please let me know what needs to be done to make this switch as seemless and easy as possible, I would appreciate it. We would not like there to be any hiccups in day to day work...

DO NOT BUT XP workstations on an NT platfom! I thought I had solved the problem, but we are still going through nightmares. Especially with roaming profiles and printing. I can not stress this enough.

The other alternative would be... upgrade the server to XP, but will the old NT workstations still behave in that environment? Would we be forced to upgrade all workstations to XP?

We have XP boxes on our NT server working just fine. Printers were the biggest problem, but used this KB article to clean those problems up:

We were having logon speed issues with XP laptops on NT4 servers. This was resolved by putting the server IP address in the Wins setting on the laptop.

If you have no choice but to go this way PMICHELL, I suggest purchasing a windows 2000 server that can act as your print server, and a place to keep your user profiles.
I find Joe's comment hard to believe (sorry Joe) because our organization has 25 independant offices which recently all moved to This platform. They are all reporting the same problems, if not more.

well, believe what you want...I won't hesitate to add/upgrade to XP next time around. But then, I don't have 25 offices to worry about either.
