Has anyone had experience with an NT4 spooler failing on a semi-regular basis without leaving any record of why in the event viewer? I am running SP6a and am considering refeshing... Any ideas???

This is what I would do:

1. Insure you have extra capacity on the boot drive. Spool files get big. You can move the spooling to any Drive you want.

2. Stop the spooler services and delete any temporary file that may have got stuck there. Restart the service

Make sure all your printer drivers are at the latest rev. HP especially is notorious for a) buggy drivers and b) having the driver install unnecessary print monitors on the print server that need to be disabled after installation. You want to make sure your running basic drivers only on the server.

If everything seems to be going well: you don't have enough information.......

The NT spooler does not like to send to a network printer. If these printers are not LPT based, then try doing a "print directly to the printer". If you spool to a spooler you get problems. I changed this setting and my problems went away.

Well, ok, some of them anyway.

The capacity (or available space) on the spooler drive is probably the most important issue. I gotta disagree with you, Zelandakh, though - the NT Spooler was designed for network printers. Circumventing the spooler causes nothing but s l o w performance.

MasterRacker is right on track, as well. HP makes a GREAT printer, but their drivers s*@k!
