I have a Windows NT 4.0 server where the mouse stopped working. It is your basic 2 button serial mouse. It used to work fine with the 'Microsoft Serial Mouse Driver'. Then it stopped working. If i choose change on the general tab of the Mouse applet in control panel it shows Microsoft PS/2 Mouse as the only 'Compatible device'. No matter what type of mouse i choose i get no pointer at startup, and entries in the event log saying:
1) [Source=Service Control Manager] 'The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: 4mmdat Mouclass Sermouse
2) [Source=Mouclass] 'Could not locate the device object for one or more pointer devices'

I checked the registry, and it seems to have the keys for MouClass and Sermouse (these keys point to the location of the Sermouse.sys and Mouclass.sys and contain some other DWORD values) under the
HKLM\System\ControlSet0\Services
Key, but seems to be missing the keys
\HKLM\Hardware\Devicemap\PointerPort
and
\HKLM\Hardware\Devicemap\PointerClass
Which should point to the Sermouse And Mouclass Services keys, respectively. I tried manually adding these keys using my WinNt Workstation as a template but they are deleted every time I reboot.

Sorry about the long post, TIA for any help you can provide.

Could your manufacturing facility benefit from real time process monitoring? Would you like your employees to be able to see up to the minute goal and actual production?

2 hopefully helpfull idead.

1. Check your BIOS to make sure the Serial Port is enabled or Pointer Device.

2. Try a different Mouse! Maybe the mouse is the problem. Dave Namou, MCSE CCEA

Dave,
Thanks for the response. I looked at my BIOS settings as you suggested, and Com1-4 are set to disabled. I tried changing COM 1 from disabled to COM1 3F8 IRQ4 and to COM2 2F8 IRQ3. Either of these settings causes the message 'Serial Port 1 Resource Conflict' to be displayed when booting. Once NT starts up everything looks the same as it did with the port set to disabled. COM1 - COM 4 are still show in the control panel Ports applet.

As for your suggestion of trying a different mouse, this same mouse was working on this computer before and i am trying evertyhing with 2 different mice, just in case.

Thanks again.
Any other ideas? Ruairi
