I've got a W2K Domain controller and WinNT PDC with which I have to establish a trust relationship.

I cannot can not add the name of the W2K domain to the WinNT "trusting domains list" because the W2K domain name does not fit in the WinNT "trusting domains list" text box. The text box that WinNT uses to add a trusted domain can hold 15 char. The W2K domain that I need to trust is 16 char (XXXXXXXX-XXX.COM). The "M" on the ".COM" does not fit in the text box. As a result. I cannot add the domain name to the "NT PDC trusts list".

I was told that if I left off the ".COM", NT would assume a ".COM" extention on the domain. I have tried this and I am still haveing trouble.

When I setup the trusts with (XXXXXXXX-XXX) without the ".COM" I am able to add the trust relationships but I not am to verify the trust relationship. In NT I am adding a TRUSTING domain XXXXXXXX-XXX to USER MANAGER and in W2K I am adding a TRUSTED domain XXXXXX to Active Directory for doamins and trusts. When I attempt to verify the trust relationship in W2K I get the following message. "To complete this operation, you must log on to domain XXXXXX as a user with permissions to modify trusts." It prompts me for a username and password and I can never get past this point.

Please help.

When you setup a W2K Domain, you should have given it two names. A full DNS-based name (like <companyname>.com), and also a short NetBIOS-based name, for NT4 support.

You need to use the NetBIOS-based name for trust relationships on the NT4 box. [auto] MCSE NT4/W2K

Note, if you installed W2K in Native Mode, then you won't have this short NetBIOS name set. Native Mode is for when you ONLY have Windows 2000 boxes. Since you have an NT4 domain you need to communicate with, you need to be in Mixed Mode. [auto] MCSE NT4/W2K

Thank you this info. was very helpfull.

I have successfully established a trust between the NT Server and the W2K server were the W2k trusts the NT.

I'm still have problems making the trust were the NT box will trust the W2K box. The new issue is a permissions problem though not a domain name length problem. Thanks guys.
