NT Backup not deleting E000XXX.log files

We are backing up our Exchange Database (Information store) using NTBackup which runs on a scheduled task every night. The problem that we are having is that the log files (E000XXX.LOG) are not getting cleared out after the backup has completed and our disk free space is shrinking. If we open the job that runs everynight to backup the exchange database and run it interactive the logs get cleared out. So the only thing that we are doing different is running the job in session not scheduled. Has anyone else come accross this?

When it runs as a scheduled tasks, which credentials is it using?

Never thought of looking in the event log but have done that now and all looks ok with no errors. It shows the NT Backup starting and then showing which database its backing up and the finishing Successfully. Nothing about clearing out the old logs

What happens if you leave the server logged in, but locked ?

Actually, I was referring to the credentials used for the backup job task. But, if it says it's successfull, I'm not worrying about that.

So - it's doing a FULL backup of the information store, and not the mailboxes, correct?

Keep in mind that the only two backup types that purge the transaction logs are full backups and incremental backups. If you are performing copy backups or differentials, the transaction logs won't be purged. Also, you are doing online backups of the ENTIRE storage group, and not just one information store, right? The transaction logs are per storage group, and not per store, so if you're only backing up one store (even if it's a full backup) and not all stores, the logs won't be purged.

Sorry forgot to add the the Backup Type is set to NORMAL. The other options we can set it to are Copy, Differential, Incremental and Daily.

We had this issue before and the solution for our domain was...make sure their is a full and complete backup of all the IS stores on the exchange server.

If their are errors or mailboxes are missed, generally the log files would still clear.

We use arcserve so i cannot comment on any other backup software but it should apply regardless of the backup software.
