We had cause to reboot our Domain server (standalone). The server went down OK but when it came back up it would NOT login to the Domain controller! The event log stated a 'duplicate name' found. The server was 'stuck' in the Network Neighbourhood and so all network services were reporting 'could start due to duplicate network'. We have never had this before. We do use a WINS server (on the PDC) but again, no changes have been made. After 3 HOURS of trying, we eventually took the server out of the domain, put it in a workgroup, waited about half hour, and the server finally left the Net N/hood. Server came back up as normal but now we are worried about rebooting again!! Any ideas why this would happen ? Also, is there a 'standard' way to get rid of a name in the Net/Nhood??? Thanks

Hi,
1:Check on the Wins if the duplicate server is not in Static IP.
2:Many duplicate problems occur when some server had multiple network interfaces (Multihomed).

This is what would happen if you changed the IP address and then didn't do an orderly shutdown. WINS would tell the server to get off the network when it rebooted since it already had a server with the same name in its database with a different IP address. If you deleted the name from WINS you would have been able to reboot the system and bring it back into the network.

As far as getting the name out of Network Neighborhood, I wouldn't sweat over it. It's in a dynamic database that's virtually impossible to alter directly. You'd just have to let it leave the database as it expires. It shouldn't have taken more than a few hours.
