I have a stupid question. If I create a user share (folder)And give the share read, write, modify & delete priveleges. How do I keep the user from being able to delete the shared folder itself? Any help would be appreciated.
Don't share the folder. Sounds dumb, I know, but it works. What I have in mind could get you fired (if you aren't SysAdmin. This ISN'T the usual way to deny access, just hard to beat for those who have Admins in awe of ancient solutions.) For those with Admins wondering why you are trying to hide something, never mind.
Post here. Will respond with a PC legal solution.
If you're physically on the machine that hosts the folder or they can get to the folder throught a different share higher up in the tree they can delete it. If they are accessing the share through Network Neighborhood or a mapped drive they can delete the contents but not the folder itself.
Jeff
masterracker@hotmail.com

Of all the things I've lost in life, I miss my mind the most ...
Jeff, there's a way to keep anybody (even admin) from accessing a folder over a network. But who would want to try? Administrators take a dim view of those who try to deceive or hide.
I have heard of that (though I don't now how) but joel's original question sounds more like he's just worried about inept users wiping out a share.
Jeff
masterracker@hotmail.com

Of all the things I've lost in life, I miss my mind the most ...
Go into the Security tab for the folder and click the advanced button. From there you can remove the right to delete the folder you are sharing, but allow deletion of files and subfolders.
Thanks Technodaddy. Saved me some keystrokes however Alt255. I would be interested in your devious, evil plan (rubbing my hands together) As a SysAdmin, I like to arm myself with these little nibblets. If you don't feel right about posting here just email me. brazell@bmh.com

Thanks all,
war...

Good to see more activity here. I was getting worried and hence haven't been here in a while.
It's on the way, Warmongr. All: I didn't feel comfortable posting those tips in the forums. Some of the concepts are well known but there is no sense in making anybody's job harder by releasing them to the general public.

<a href=
Hey Alt, I'd be interested in the info as well. It's good to know what you're up against.
Jeff
masterracker@hotmail.com

Of all the things I've lost in life, I miss my mind the most ...
