Hello All.

I'm attempting to build a BDC using a CD containing NT 4.0 Server.

The problem is, the network card in the server will not work without Service Pack 6 installed first.

Of course, halfway through the NT Server install it attempts to join the network and fails due to the NIC not being recognised ending the install. I can't install SP6 until the NT install has completed! Vicious circle!

I've tried disabling the onboard NIC and using a different card to no avail.

My question is, can I upgrade the NT 4.0 Server installation files to include Service Pack 6?

If not, has anyone encountered a similar problem and how did they work around it?

You could install an older Ethernet card which is supported by NT4's install then swap the cards after you have SP6 installed.

I don't think you can install NT from scratch with sp6 in it

I ran into same problem with installing BDC, finally I found an older PC with ISA port (the black long slot), the BDC install seens like computer with ISA slot, even if I ave nothing plugged in the ISA, my netgear FA311 works great

if you looking for a PCI based card, try ones make by 3com

Thanks for the advice guys.

I was really hoping there would be a way to "roll up" my NT 4.0 Server installation files to include Service Pack 6.

Is there any way I can do this?

I need the same information. I read about extracting the SP6 I386 files over the SP1 I386 files and then copying this merged I386 to a folder on your hard drive. The reason for this is that anytime you need to add a component you can point to the updated I386 files to avoid reinstalling the service pack. Is there any reason why you could not run an installation from the merged I386 folder? Slipstreaming for NT4? Why is it not possible?

Why don't you build it and then put it on the network?

Jstubb.
Can't copy the i386 folder from SP6a over the NT 4.0 cd i386 folder. When I do this, it creates an i386 folder over 700Mb in size and won't fit on a CD. :(

Busabus.
That's fine when building a Member Server or PDC. However, when building a BDC it insists that a domain is joined during the installation, otherwise it fails.

The quick solution is to stick an older network card which NT SP3 likes in the machine during installation. Once the machine's built, SP6 it and install the newer card.

My question though was "can I upgrade the NT 4.0 Server installation files to include Service Pack 6?"

Cheers
Mike
