nsrstage: error, no matching devices on '<nsr_server_name>'
nsrstage: cannot open nsrstage session with '<nsr_server_name>'
nsrstage: failed to clone any save sets

what could i have possibly missed out?

Of course it should read: do NOT assign devices to pools!!

i didn't. there were no storage nodes selected on the pool

I don't understand - there is no 'storage node' parameter for a pool at all.

what i meant was devices. i didn't check any in the pools.

Well, may you just let us know what you have configured.

is this true (or i have just misconfigured something)...

clients backed up WITHOUT an entry(s) in the clone storage node attribute CANNOT be staged/clone, while clients backed up WITH an entry(s) in the clone storage node attribute CAN be staged/cloned?

anyway, here is my configuration:

Pool:
type: NSR pool;
name: A Test Staging Pool;
comment: ;
enabled: Yes;
pool type: Backup Clone;
label template: Default Clone;
groups: ;
clients: ;
save sets: ;
levels: ;
devices: ;
store index entries: No;
auto media verify: No;
Recycle to other pools: No;
Recycle from other pools: No;
volume type preference: ;

Client:
type: NSR client;
name: unix01;
server: backsvr;
comment: ;
archive services: Disabled;
schedule: full_everyday;
browse policy: 1_day_use;
retention policy: 1_day_use;
directive: Unix with compression directives;
group: UNIX_TEST;
save set: /;
remote access: ;
remote user: ;
password: ;
backup command: ;
application information: ;
ndmp: No;
aliases: unix01;
archive users: ;
storage nodes: node01;
clone storage nodes: ;
client OS type: Solaris;
CPUs: 1;
NetWorker version: 7.0.Build.322;
enabler in use: Yes;
licensed applications: ;

Group:
type: NSR group;
name: UNIX_TEST;
comment: ;
autostart: Disabled;
start time: "3:33";
client retries: 5;
clones: No;
clone pool: Default Clone;
migration clone pool: Migration Clone;
printer: ;

it still shows the same error.

So far so good. What about the staging resource?

i dont have any staging resources defined. all i have left is the default_staging which remained to be the default

type: NSR stage;
name: default stage;
comment: ;
enabled: No;
high water mark (%): 90;
low water mark (%): 60;
save set selection: oldest save set;
destination pool: Default Clone;
devices: ;
max storage period: 7;
start now: ;

the command that i issue is
# nsrstage -v -b"A Test Staging Pool" -m -S <ssid>

So you are not using the auto-staging resource at all. In this case i assume you are using the wrong storage node for cloning. Do not forget that NW parameters are defined even if they appear blank. For the client's "clone storage node" the one from the NW server's client will be used by default. And there is obviously no matching device on this node.

Please read the "nsr_client" manpage for more about the client's attributes.

i already placed all my storage nodes in the clone storage node attribute, but still i get the same error message.

??? - so why can't we see it in the client resource above?

after your post, i modified the client resource to include a storage node entry...

Client:
type: NSR client;
name: unix01;
server: backsvr;
comment: ;
archive services: Disabled;
schedule: full_everyday;
browse policy: 1_day_use;
retention policy: 1_day_use;
directive: Unix with compression directives;
group: UNIX_TEST;
save set: /;
remote access: ;
remote user: ;
password: ;
backup command: ;
application information: ;
ndmp: No;
aliases: unix01;
archive users: ;
storage nodes: node01;
clone storage nodes: node02;
client OS type: Solaris;
CPUs: 1;
NetWorker version: 7.0.Build.322;
enabler in use: Yes;
licensed applications: ;

this is the result:
nsrstage: error, no matching devices on '<nsr_server_name>'
nsrstage: cannot open nsrstage session with '<nsr_server_name>'
nsrstage: failed to clone any save sets
