Is it alright to refer to NOW as a broad based organization?

That reminds me of when I lived in the UK and my landlady told me, "You received a letter from abroad today."

I asked, "What's her name?". <grin>

When I was a teenager, my family went whitewater rafting on the French Broad River in western NC.

Afterwards, we went to the gift shop. I got a tee-shirt that proudly read "I survived the French Broad". Being a teenage boy, I thought this was quite clever. Until, that is, my oldest sister emerged from the shop with a shirt that simply read, "The French Broad".

Needless to say, we couldn’t wear them at the same time.

Good times, good times.

I'll add that our mailman is no longer a mailman. The gender neutral title should now be a personperson. (Letter carrier just isn't as fun.)

And no more kids running down the street yelling "Hey Mr. Mailman!"

'tis a sad day indeed.

I may have to have a drink later

'reminds me of when a girl in my high school math class, dissatisfied with a homework assignment, announced: "I'm revolting!" Our teacher, never one to miss an opportunity for a laugh, came back with "You certainly are!"

Not 100% why THIS reminded me of THAT, but "why anything?"

Blackadder: "The peasants are revolting!"
Good Queen Bess: "They certainly are, Blackadder."

I might well have mis-remembered this, or even made it up!

What is this thread about?

My guess... it's about... to end!

[white]As soon as I hit 'submit' I realized that 'derogatory' isn't really the right word. It is more condescending - like calling a woman 'honey' or 'sweetie'.[/white]

Really? I'd agree with derogatory personally. Another US/UK thing?

Sha,

Don't get me wrong; it's not polite by any means. But I'd say that, in the US anyway, it isn't on par with calling a woman 'the B word' (as evidenced by the fact that 'Broad' is not 'the B word'). But I'm just one guy from one area....

There are a broad range of opinions here. Reading them on my broadband connection always makes pulling up the page much faster. The broad influence of the younger generation with their "more, more and faster" attitude has broadened the range of broadband based applications.

I went to Broadway last night, and there was a broad variety of plays and musicals to see. We decided on a little known show called "Broad St." My husband straightened his broad shoulders when we walked through the rotunda, but as soon as we were seated, he found that his broad assumption (that the seats would be larger because of the cost) was incorrect.

I hope this isn't overly broad...

Were you really giggling for 19 hours?

Well, I slept at some point in there, and had to go to class last night (no giggling there, just groaning).

I find threads like this humorous, and there are always PC people worrying about the correctness of words like this. I've been called both "B" words before (and I'm sure there are others if I think about it). The BIG "B" word was a compliment, I worked to earn that, it meant I accomplished what I set out to do. ;-)

If I didn't find the humor in it, I'd just get PO'd and join NOW.

John, as you're referring to it as 'the B word' I guess it offends some & I'd better not come straight out with it when I ask the question! Are you aluding to a word originaly meaning female dog? I certainly wouldn't be offended by this coming from someone I knew, in fact it's something I'll occassionaly describe myself as, but I'd probably look at them a bit funny if they called me a broad.

I once saw a bumper sticker on a Red Mercedes SL600 driven by someone who could have been a supermodel that read:

Beautiful Intelligent Talented Charming and Horny

If this is offensive, please red-flag it..

I've heard "Being In Total Control of Herself"

There's a great song by the group Saffire about it.
