Novell Netware 5.1 Installation error ?

Hi,

I am new bee to Novell, basically
i was trying to Install Novell netware 5.1 on a system.

I had booted the system with 5.1 cd and
it goes thru all the installation, and somewhere
in the middle of the installation it asks for
the drivers for STORAGE DEVICES & NETWORK BOARD

when i give some generic drivers , it says
its not supported and stops the installatio.


I cant even skip this installation step.

Basically i dont want this system on the network and
want to test the installation as how it works and all.


So how can i do a simple netware 5.1 installation
where in it should NOT ask me these questions as
what drivers to be loaded .


I am completely new to netware and hard
to know about these drivers for storage devices, network.

Hi bill,


Got another quick question.

I cant get into X SERVER -- Graphical Console.

When i say ctrl + Esc and choose
the number 7 as option for X SERVER -- Graphical Console.

It goes blank .

How do i get to graphical console.
Do i need to load some drivers for VGA or monitor ???

Hi again

From the server prompt, you start the GUI by typing STARTX

Of course, on your machine it is probably already loaded since it shows up in the Ctrl-Esc list.

Generally speaking the GUI will work fine with any monitor and VESA-compliant video card. The only video cards that I've ever had probles with were the older ATI cards because they weren't completely VESA compliant.

The first thing you can do is reboot the server by issuing the RESET SERVER command. When the machine comes back up & NetWare reloads, the GUI will probably start automatically; if it doesn't, try the STARTX commnand.

Let me know if you still get the blank screen & we'll try some things

When i start the server, then initially i get
the GUI screen and it goes off.

And it comes to console.

Now from here again if i wanted to go to
GUI tool. I say ctrl+Esc

and when i choose 7 option, it doesnt
bring up any GUI. It goes Blank.

You can use Alt-Esc to scroll through all the different screens. Can you get to it that way?

Hi Bill,

I could resolve the GUI console issue
by changing the monitor.

Now can u help me in resolving this issue.

I have a windows network here and this is the
only novell server i had installed.

The novell gets IP address from a DHCP server.
I could able to ping to the novell box from
a windows system with that IP address as well.


How can i Share the novell drive (SYS) , so
that it can be visible from the windows network
through any system.So that i can copy & paste
files on to this SYS drive through windows system.


I had seen some NDS while installing but not able to
get to it.

I had installed some novell client for windows
on some system but was un-successful in getting
the NOVELL server on to this network.

How can do this ??

Hi, Catherine.
I'll try to go in order.

You should assign a static IP address to the NetWare server just like you do with your Windows ones.

Once you have your server built, there are any number of things to do next.... create users in NDS, set up login scripts, set up drive mappings, etc. Novell has good documentation for NetWare 6 at

You should go there to learn the basics.

As for getting to files, with NetWare 5.1, you have one option: installing the Novell client on your workstation. Once this is done, you can log into the NDS tree and you will pick up whatever drive mappings are in your login script.

The best scenario, though, would be for you to migrate to NetWare 6. With it, there are a whole host of ways to get to files & services. With NetWare 6, you can:
1) Get to your files from anywhere... LAN, Internet, etc
2) Securely synchronize files between a remote workstation & the server. This is very useful for laptop users.
3) Print to your corporate printers from anywhere... across the WAN, LAN, or Internet. The available printers appear in a web browser & you pick the one that you want to print to. Drivers are automatically downloaded & the print job is sent to the printer.
4) Remotely manage your NetWare servers from anywhere through a web browser
5) Manage NDS & other services like DNS/DHCP from anywhere through a web browser

I forgot to mention that NetWare 6 also doesn't require a Novell client for Windows clients to access their files.

In fact, users of Linux, Windows, or Macintosh workstations can get to files on a NetWare server without any special client.

I guess it takes some time for me to understand
the terminology and basics of novell.

But for a quick start i was checking the
web server and FTP server which is installed by
default by novell.

Used the url://novellsystem:2200

and was playing around the FTP server, web server.
And I was able to get to the novell system
thru FTP server and able to copy and paste files
from a windows system.


I was checking the other things in novell by
going thru the web manager URL, its awesome,
it goes thru 128 bit encryption.

We really did not know that novell has some much
stuff around. (portal,ftp,web manager ..etc..)

Really good working on Novell.

And one more thing you were talking about upgrading
to netware 6.0 . Is it really good ?

The only thing which is interesting for me as you
have said that it doesnt need novell client installation.
Then how will clients access the files of novell server ?

I love NetWare 6.
I've found that it has many compelling features that really help people work better, smarter, and more safely. If you think the web services in NetWare 5.1 are cool, you'd really drop your jaw after seeing what 6 can do.

I have to be brutally honest, though. While the web services provide much value, they can be a bit tricky to get set up properly. Therefore, I created a How-To document that nobody reads over on the NetWare 6 forum.

As for Native File Access, it allows Windows, Macintosh, and Linux clients to store their data on a NetWare server without any special client. The NetWare server actually runs the native file systems from these platforms (CIFS for Windows, NFS for Linux, and whatever-the-heck Mac uses).

For Windows, if you browse Network Neighborhood, you'll see the NetWare server & its shares out there just as if it was a Windows server. You can connect to them, create drive mappings, etc. Pretty cool stuff

I believe that some basic knowledge of Novell products would be really beneficial for you. To begin with, I'd concentrate on NetWare and NDS (or eDirectory as it's called now), especially NDS because it ties everything in the network together. There are many good books that you can buy and Novell's web site has a plethora of information.

If you have any questions, your best bet is to just post them here in this forum or in the NetWare 6 one. That way, other people can help you in case I don't check the posts for a few days.

Is there a JDK on netware 5.1 ?

I was trying to install some Oracle XML stuff on
netware 5.1. The document says that it needs JDK 1.1
or 1.2 .

I dont see any of such thing in Netware.

Does JDK gets installed with OS by default or
do we have to download and install in netware 5.1 ?

Yep.

From console command Prompt:"INETCFG"
Then choose "manage configuration"
then choose "configure remote console access"
Don't forget to set a password, etc.

Dansykes, thats for the IPX RCONSOLE and is in no way secure, password is in clear text on line and in config file.

If you want to configure the IP based remote console, then type in RCONAG6 ENCRYPT at the command line. Give it a password and accept the default ports and tell it YES when it asks to write the LDRCONAG.CFG file. Then at the command prompt type in LDRCONAG.NCF and also add it to you AUTOEXEC.NCF The password will be secure and you have the option to also use a secure port for line security.

Now, both RCONSOLE and RCONAG6 use a lot of resources on a server when you run a remote session. I like to use AdRem's Remote Console (

the free version is not secure, but it uses less resources on the server and I find it easier to deal with and navigate. If you want security, you'll need to buy it.
