Hi,

I am new bee to Novell, basically
i was trying to Install Novell netware 5.1 on a system.

I had booted the system with 5.1 cd and
it goes thru all the installation, and somewhere
in the middle of the installation it asks for
the drivers for STORAGE DEVICES & NETWORK BOARD

when i give some generic drivers , it says
its not supported and stops the installatio.

I cant even skip this installation step.

Basically i dont want this system on the network and
want to test the installation as how it works and all.

So how can i do a simple netware 5.1 installation
where in it should NOT ask me these questions as
what drivers to be loaded .

I am completely new to netware and hard
to know about these drivers for storage devices, network.

Please help !!

--Thanks
catherine

Hi, Catherine.
The storage and network drivers are required for installation. Even if you don't plug the machine into the network, you must set up networking.

If you could tell me what brand/model of storage (scsi, RAID, IDE, ATAPI) and Network Cards your machine has, I may be able to help you choose the right drivers.

Thanks Bill for the reply.

I am basically trying to install on some
HP desktop machine. HP Pavilion 4440

Hard drive is IDE
Netword card what i have NIC = Netgear FA310TX

This is what i see on the installation screen:
=====================================================

The following device drivers were detected for this
server. Add,change, or delete device drivers as needed.

DEVICE TYPE DRIVER NAMES

Storage Devices IDECD,IDEHD

Network Boards

Netware Loadable Modules (optional)

===========================================================

Let me know if you need anything else.

--Thanks
catherine

The storage drivers are correct for IDE devices....

The Netgear NIC has, in fact, been YES tested and approved by Novell. You should use the following driver: NGRPCI.LAN

If you have problems getting it loaded, let me know.

I had changed the netgear NIC to some other
Linksys card and when i had given some
other drivers , it had taken them and went through
the installation for that particular stage.

Now after that it was asking me about the partition
and i gave 3856MB for sys.

I had 4GB hard drive and 250mb i had given for
boot partition and remaining i gave it for sys.

Now after sometime i have another error coming up:

====================================================

An attempt to mount CD-ROM volume NW51 as a netware
volume failed. control will be switched to the system
console screen where you may view the error explanation.
(nwconfig-5-391)
======================================================

Now once i say continue it gives me errors like
unable to load files , etc.... and comes back to
system console.

Why is this happening ???

Do i need to load the drivers for cdrom too , how ?

I have one more quick , during installation if the
system asks for the drivers for some devices, do i
only have to select from the list or is they a way
i can give the drivers which are there in my floppy
drive?

Like in windows when it asks for drivers i can give
the path where the drivers are like A:\ floppy drive,,etc..

--Thanks
Catherine

About the storage drivers:
IDEHD & IDECD should be fine for your machine.

About the network drivers:
Without knowing the model of the Linksys card, I can't tell whether or not it will work with NetWare.

In order to load a custom driver, you first go to the screen that lists all the available drivers. Press your INS key & another screen will pop up. This one will ask for the location of the custom driver (usually the A:\ drive).

Your hard drive partitioning scheme is fine.

As for the error message that you get, there could be several causes. Can you tell me exactly what it says that it can't load?

OK. We have two things to figure out--the NIC not loading & then the other things.

NIC Problem:
I'll assume that DLH5X.LAN is the correct driver for your Linksys NIC (if that's still the one you're using).

1) At the server console, you should be able to issue this command:
load dlh5x.lan slot=? frame=ethernet_ii name=dlh5x_1

You need to supply that line with the correct PCI slot number (the slot=... part). Once you type in that command, you should not receive any error messages.

2) If you can execute that line without any errors, then you have the right drivers & the OS knows which PCI slot the NIC is in.

3) You should be able to do the install again. When you get to the part to load network drivers, make sure this driver is in your list & then choose to Modify Driver Properties. When the properties screen comes up, make sure that the proper PCI slot is listed. If it isn't, put it in.

The Other issue:
1) I want to verify that you're launching the NetWare install by inserting the CDROM & booting directly off it, not a floppy
2) Is your CDROM drive relatively (within 3 years) new? The reason I ask is that some older drives have issues reading the format (I believe it's ISO9660). You may need to use a newer CDROM drive. One way to check is to issue the following at the console:
load cdrom
cd mount 51 /long

If those lines work without errors, we know that the drivers are OK.

If you could, try the steps above & let me know how it goes.

I made a typo.
Your cdrom checking statements should be:
load cdrom
cd mount nw51 /long

After the installation is failing and it comes to
the system console, the prompt what i see on the
screen is

TEMPORARY_08FAD693:

When i say

TEMPORARY_08FAD693: load dlh5x.lan slot=3 frame=ethernet_ii name=dlh5x_1
Unable to find load file DLH5X.LAN

TEMPORARY_08FAD693: load cdrom
Unable to find load file CDROM

TEMPORARY_08FAD693: cd mount 51/long

CDINST-5.00-231:
Detected unkown/changed media, updating the rom info.

CDINST-5.00-305:
LONG Name space support enabled.

CDINST-5.00-275: INFO:
No volume information found, mount failed.

CDINST-5.00-275: INFO:

TEMPORARY_08FAD693:

And comes back to the console

Wow. How frustrating this must be for you.

At this point, the best thing to do is....
1) Reboot the server
2) Boot from the NetWare CD to start the installation
3) When you get to the storage / network adapter driver section,
a) Put in the driver for the NIC (provided that the NIC has a driver for NetWare. Personally, I'd prefer the Netgear card over the Linksys one), making sure that you also Modify Driver Properties & put in the proper PCI slot number. If there is a problem, the driver will not load & you will be notified of this.
b) For the storage drivers, use IDEHD & IDECD
4) Proceed with the installation. For a 4GB drive, use 200MB for the DOS partition & 3.8GB for the SYS volume. Of course, I'd recommend against keeping your data on the SYS volume, but it's OK since this is a test server
5) If you still run into problems, let me know exactly what the console screen/error messages are saying.

Good luck

I had replaced the NIC with Netgear and got the
drivers from netgear technical support.

I had rebooted the system and started the installation
and gave IDEHD & IDECD as drives
and Netgear as NIC ( gave the driver from floppy).

And after that it fails while mounting the cdrom again.

When it comes to the console , i was trying with these
commmands , but gives me these errors

====================================
temporary-5.00-1948: cd mount

CDINST-5.00-021:
Command is not valid.

temporary-5.00-1948: cd mount netware_51

CDINST-5.00-0275: INFO:
No Volume information found, mount has failed.

=========================================

I am not sure what is happening , Novell is
almost testing my patience :)

Sorry to bother you all the day.

-- Thanks
Catherine

I tried one more command from the console just now

TEMPORAY_OE6731AE: cd device list

The output is

** CD-ROM Device List

No Act. Device Name VolumeName Mounted
3 Y [V025-A1-D2:0] NW51 N
TEAC CD-532E-B 1.0B

Actually, you're being very patient.
At times, NetWare can be a beast to get configured. Once going, though, it's extremely stable and reliable.

If you can do a CD device list, it means that the drivers are working & the CD is recognized. In your post above, you said that you tried to do cd mount nw_51

However, if we look at the cd device list, the volume name is shown as nw51. So, theoretically, you should be able to do a cd mount nw51 (or "cd mount 3" should also work)

Try that & see if you can continue the install

I had tried this command

TEMPORARY_of87c0c4: CD MOUNT NW51

Result:

CDINST-5.00-024:info:

CDINST-5.00-0270:info:

CDINST-5.00-0288:info:

segments cannot be located

CDINST-5.00-025:ERROR:

OK.
Have you, by chance, checked the CDROM for scratches or anything that may interfere with reading it?

If it's scratched up, try to clean it & try again.

Other than that, I'm about out of ideas.

Maybe somebody else has an idea?!?

I was out the whole day today and did not check.

I will clean the disk and try again

Hi Lawn,

Yeh the disk is still there in the cdrom when i get
this error ??

thanks

Hi Bill,

Yahooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Guess what has happened ??????????????????????

"I was able to successfully install"

After you told me to see if there are any scratches
on the cd, i checked them. I had seen a small scratch
at the end of the cd.

So i got another netware cd and
was able to install successfully without any errors.

"THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL THE HELP & SUPPORT
YOU HAD GIVEN TO ME"

Thanks once again
