Are there any consequences to implementing a new novell 5 server that will replace a 3.X server, into an existing tree containing 4.X servers? Can this be done without causing NDS, NDPS, replication, and or other conficts? What could potentially happen to the other 4.X servers, especially the masters? The servers are spread out across multiple WAN links. By, "new novell 5 server" I mean a whole new box that will have the 3.X database migrated to it. Bare with me I'm sort of new to this.
Thanks.

Implementation of the 4x and 5 is possible. There are some TIDs in regards of that - but surely keep on your mind to verify the versions of the NDS. NetWare 4.x servers should be service packed to have version 5.95 at least (best to my recollection). Verifyt TIDs on support.novell.com on that again. Second issue will be the fact that placement of the replicas is something to look at. If you can, separate NetWare 5 server into its own partition or to limit its participation with 4.x servers. This is reasoning of a caution not necessary a result of any particular TID. And finally on your maintenance running DSRepair will produce some errors as result of the differences (e.g. NetWare 5 doesn't allow for zero-creation time). Good luck.

Don't forget to make the NW5 box the Master REplica and only do dsrepair on it.

I added 5 NW5 servers to a WAN that started with one 4.11 server, before I finally upgraded the 4.11 server to 5. Study migration agents. Remember that native IP on NW5 is not compatible with NetWare/IP. Be prepared to ignore some error messages in DSRepair (NW5 NDS uses 'T' for Tree, which is not recognized by 4.11 NDS). It can be done, but it does require preparation and monitoring.

Do a good backup beforehand and get all the latest patches on your other servers. Check the version of NDS running on the other servers is current. Make sure not to use NW5 for small business in a multi-server environment since Novell says it's not designed for it.
Is it possible, Yes. Make sure of backups and that you have the latest SP's installed. If you are running any other products, GroupWise, Border, ManageWise it adds to the complexity of running a mixed tree. Save yourself a lot of headaches and put in a 4.X until you are ready to move to 5.x (recommend waiting for 5.1) There are just too many "gotya's" to track for the sake of have "a" 5.X server.
