We have two Netware 5.1 servers. We want to replace one of the servers, who is going to die, for a new one. We have tried to do a migration with Novell Migration Wizard 6.5 but after a while the migration stops. What is the best alternative to do the server swap? The server we are replacing holds the read/write replica of the nds. Must we also reinstalling the license files?

Please help.

With kind regards,
Kees

With the migration wizard, it really doesn't matter how you get the data from one server to the other.

If the copy fails, which has happened to me numerous times, just do an XCOPY from DOS or use ROBOCOPY. There is a great utility called BEYOND COMPARE that is excellent for comparing to make sure you have all the files copied. You can download it from DOWNLOAD.COM.

Once you have all the data copied, then you can proceed with the rest of the migration wizard which will move NDS from the old server to the new one. Just make sure NDS is clean and time is in sync before you do that.

Another note about the migration wizard.. It's easiest if you have the wizard save the trustee file assignments at the start, and then have them restore trustees when it's done. You can still perform this functionality even if you use other methods for copying the files. Also, Copying via other means is sometimes faster anyway.

And you shouldn't have to do anything with your licenses because they are stored in NDS. As long as you don't hose that up, you should be fine.

Many thanks,

Is there another way to do the migration if the migration wizard still gives problems even when I do the file copy your way?

With kind regards,

Kees

The migration wizard won't give you problems (except for the file copy) if everything is healthy before you start. Make sure time is in sync and that NDS is healthy and synchronized on all servers. Make sure you've extended the schema (Using the deployment manager) and that all old servers have the latest NDS update on them and are patched to the latest service pack.. Also, make sure that you're using the same protocol to talk to server-server and workstation-servers.. Don't do anything goofy like try to pull the old server out of production on an isolated network to do the migration. That will mess you up.

There are other ways to do it besides the migration wizard but they are much more complicated and too difficult to try to explain in brief. One way to do it is just install a 6.5 server into your tree and use the consolidation wizard to move files and rights. The consolidation utility is very similar to the migration wizard, so if you have probs with one, you could with the other.
