one of my friends is workin on an IBM thinkpad 600e any one here have a laptop like this its givin an error Error 08611 and when testing the mainboard he gets this:

DEV 086, ERR 22, FRU 0010

anybody understand what is this mean? how to solve it?

any help would be cool

Error 08611 means you have a track point failure. check your maintanence manual, you can open the keyboard and check for loose kable, clean it (airspray) and if nothing works go to the ibm support site and look for the error codes and what they recommend.
if you can connect another mouse go in bios, disable trackpoint and work with extern mouse.

FRU stands for Field Replacement Unit and is usually followed by the part number. Sounds like you have a bad part and from experience I will tell you that your 600E Stinkpad is not worth repairing. If you can find the part, it will be outrageously overpriced if you purchase it from IBM.
We use IBM exclusively where I work. We call them "IBDamned" and "I've Been Misled" but if we bought quality computers I wouldn't have a job!

Good luck,

I am having the same problem with my StinkPad (error 08611, with the 3 system board errors) and tried the suggestions you mentioned, and that still is not helping...Is it worth my time as a tech to try to get this thing to work, or do I make a paper-weight out of it??

Okay folks. Let's start with the basics. In checking IBM's website, I think the common thread here is to update the BIOS for your laptop.
Not knowing what models we are speaking of, it's hard to be more specific. Look for the BIOS for YOUR model and the model is NOT a 600e, etc. Look on the bottom of the laptop. You will find a number like FX3785 FFU and a serial number. Search the following link: Download the BIOS for a bootable floppy if your laptop HAS a floppy drive. Otherwise download the one for a bootable CD. (Change your BIOS settings so you will pick it up on startup.) If this does not do the trick, go back to IBM's support site and try searching for the error message.
And remember folks...friends don't let friends buy IBM's or Gateways.

Those error messages you have "might" reflect a true hardware failure but before assuming such, I would not forget the too often neglected basic solution, which is to update your drivers. In this particular instance, updating the trackpoint driver for your ThinkPad 600 and flash the BIOS might be good start.
Give it a shot, it's worth it.

I am haveing the same prob. but i don't know how to get the thing to boot so that i can change the bios any ideas?

Did you guys/ ladies ever find the solution to this problem? I have a friend that just ask me to take a look at this ThinkPad 600X and it has the sam 08611 Error. I have found some info on how to fix this on a Linux O/S but nobody seems to know how to get into the Bios to change it for a Windows based computer. Any suggestions?
