Notes over VPN functionality

I have a user using Notes over a VPN. She connects just fine and can read all her mail, but she can't do the following:

- send new email
- make any changes to email she forwards (can't change subject line, etc)
- create simple stationary

When she connects directly on the LAN, she doesn't have these problems.

I thought Notes only used a single network port. Could it be that certain types of activities require a different network port to be opened? Since other VPN users don't have this problem, we're thinking that it might be tied to her broadband router, perhaps we need to open an inbound port on it, but doesn't seem like it's outside the definition of a VPN?

Anyway, if someone has any ideas about how this behavior might be caused, I'd appreciate it.

Is she using the same computer in both places (i.e., laptop)? Or is she using her own computer at home? Depending on the answer, the troubleshooting process will take us in different directions. I assume she is running some VPN software, what are you using (i.e., Cisco, Symantec, SonicWall?). Who is she using for broadband? What are other people using that don't have an issue? Is she running a local firewall off her broadband router? Is she trying to use her computer via a wireless connection through the VPN? Lots of questions. Sorry.

Check that the drive mappings when connecting over the VPN are the same as when connecting directly on the LAN - if different, that's the problem. For simplicity, why not use iNotes for the remote connections? No VPN hassles that way.

Hello,

I would recommend using local Replicas for the NAB and users mail DB. Not only does this reduce traffic by 70%, IBM recommends to utilize local replicas for both LAN and VPNs now. They have made some serious ground in R6, and I have tested this in several different environments. Appears to work well and setup was a breeze. Create the local Replicas (name the local NAB pubnames.nsf), update the users Preferences with the new local AB (pubnames.nsf), and create a new Location Doc that points locally for mail and addressing. Real fast and convenient when the connection to your LAN is down. Justan idea...

Rgds,

John

Can someone tell me how to set up notes on my home computer to connect via a VPN connection? My company just started to use Notes from Exchange. So I'm a new Notes user and I need help.

Thanks

Wetmore1 : Your post having nothing to do with solving the initial problem, I suggest you start a new thread to ask your question.

Thanks for all the ideas.

The user connects with a laptop. The only difference is whether she is connecting from home over Cisco VPN through a broadband (non-wireless) router (Cox Cable) or whether she is on the office LAN.

Fred, why would drive mappings matter, if the Notes\Data folders are local?

I-Notes is OK, but not equivalent. Whereas Outlook2003 and OWA2003 are almost the same, that's not true about I-Notes yet. At least not on R5.

Packet7, thanks for the ideas about local replicas. I'll try them out and see how they do.

Shackdaddy, great to see your post as i thougt i was the only one seeing this problem. Think the solution is something to do with opening ports as you suggest but which one?
My scenario.
Notes with local address book and mail file, replicates fine over local LAN or dial up connection, but when using a VPN Tunnel via Broadband connection from home to the corporate LAN, cannot SEND MAIL. Other LAN applications work fine both ways, just Notes will not SEND MAIL!!
I am using a Broadband connection with laptop connected via Buffalo Broadband Router.
Have tried opening various ports in the 'Security' page on the Broadband Router setup but no luck. Anyone got any tips as to what else i can try?
Thanks

I haven't been able to confirm or reproduce this, but some time ago, I recall troubleshooting an issue like this. In the end I believe it had to do with the fragmentation of Notes/Domino data over the VPN. Back then we were on R4 and it seemed Notes did not like it's packets fragmented. Not sure if this holds true to R5-ND6.5, it might be something to look at.

It's all coming back to me. The MTU size and the fragmentation of the data could very well me the root cause. If you have the ability to mess with the MTU size, do so and see what happens. Here are some links to assist with this process:

(Not Notes/Domino related, but helpful nonetheless)

(Search on Notes.net for MTU, Maximum Tranmission Unit)

Please post back if you discover anything new or solve the issue!
