We have Notes/ Domino 6.51. recently we faced a problem that none of the emails with attachments were moving and they stayed in the que. When I tried to release them from the mail box, it worked and it was not happening automaic.

I increased the email quota for everyone and restarted the server and found that everything is fine. But, now even after having a bigger quota, at every enail database properties I see 90/95 or 99% space is used! I believe that before it used to show less when the mail database size was smaller compared to quota. And using compact database used to work fine. I am afraid that something bad is going to happen.

Can someone help?

Thank you.

The percentage of space used in unrelated to the actual quota. Generally, you want about a high 90%s percentage. The percentage is a percent of actual mail messages/attachments to the size of the mail database itself.

So a mail database that is 100MB and is at 99% would mean that 99MB of that 100MB is actual mail files.

The higher the percent, the more efficient use of space you are making.

In that, you shouldn't worry that something bad may happen, Notes is doing what it should. Likely you are compact with a file size reduction.

The quota will limit how large a mail file will grow. If someone is at their quota and using only 70% then that's the point where it becomes a problem and compacting is necessary. At their quota and 99%, then they have to delete mail then compact.

I find it good policy to encourage users to not keep mail they don't need, though this also depends on retention policies.

Thanks a lot. I was a bit worried.
