hi folks! i use notepad frequently in xp and have never had any probs. with it. suddenly, using it through the start menu, i get the following message:
"the c:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exe application cannot be run in win32 mode"
i have googled the prob. but only found a possibility of corruption of the csrss.exe file (virus?). only one version shows in task manager so i don't think this is the issue?
i have been into windows, found notepad and put a shortcut on the desktop; works fine! just a bit annoyed that i don't know the answer!!
any similar experiences? answers?
thanks

thanx mbusa, i'll drag it to quick launch.
danjwalker, i don't think that i have a viral prob, just a corrupt link somewhere. however, i'll run all additional anti-stuff to make sure. thanx for your input.
still puzzled as to origin/meaning of error though.

Replacing the csrss.exe sounds good but make sure that the machine that you replace it from has the same service pack level and updates as this is a critical file for xp and you don't wanna make a mistake with it.

I have not tried, but you also might not be able to replace it in windows alone. It may be protected as it is in memory. The easy way to do it if this is the problem is to copy it to the directory where it is and call it csrss2.exe, boot of your xp cd and go into recovery console. Google shall tell you what to do after that.

Is this machine at SP2 and fully updated?

Non-administrative users can obtain system permissions on the destination computer

In Folder Options/ View, uncheck the "Hide extensions for known file types", this hides the last part of a file name, reducing clutter in folder windows. See if the Notepad.exe (in System32) file extension has been tampered with.

Nuke notepad and get Textpad. HTML editor, sort files on multiple keys, separate screen/print fonts, file compare, word count, find words in multiple files (and build links to those words), open multiple files at the same time, open binary files; etc...

You'll never want to use notepad again.

hi folks! just have time to pop back and say thanks to all contributers. had a lot of stuff to sort through. been playing with 'administrator' permissions etc. made a mess and had to re-normalize my pc (don't ask!)
to LINNEY: i had had no success until trying your suggestion on settings; "Hide extensions for known file types". unchecked it as suggested and VOILA..received the lost shortcut pop-up, selected 'fix' and notepad now works again from startup menu. excellent stuff.
thanks again to all
