This comp is using Win98Se on an "AT" MB/case. It does not hang on the "Windows is shutting down" screen like others do. It goes past that then goes to a black screen instead of displaying the "It's OK to shut down computer" screen and the "power" stays on. I have even changed the logos.sys file to another logo to see if that showed up but it did not. Does anyone know what this particular problem maybe? How does Windows "look" for the logos.sys file?

Please note: I have tried every procedure in MS shutdown problem troubleshooter![curse]

Ummm, an AT motherboard cannot shut itself off. You need an ATX motherboard for that.

Yes, I know that. This comp is going to go to someone else who is use to the "It's ok to shutdown comp" screen, which this comp mysteriously will not display. It just displays a black screen.

I don't think you've tried every one. You couldn't fininsh it before 2004 at the earliest. (kidding mostly, because there are a multitude of possible fixes)

What of the rundll user desktop icon? Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Windows 98 should pick up a bitmap file called logos.sys in C:\windows (or whatever folder windows is installed in), if its right size (320x400 pixels, 256 colours - 8 bit) - c. 126kb file.

Have you tried something like desktop architect to change the logos? (
PS - I don't use 98 much now - but remember this problem coming up before - but unfortunately can't remember a definitive fix.

[2thumbsup]I fixed it!! Thanks for all the responses. Well, I ended up going back to the bios for another look. I checked with another computer that I had that has the same motherboard, same version of bios (AMI), and had all the same settings in both computers. My computer shutdown fine including the "It's ok to shut down" screen. But the other comp did not. Again, I had set them up the same. That is why I was convinced it was a "windows" problem. So I decided to hunt down a different bios version, from AMI 1.9. AMI 2.0 was the newest one I found. Updated. Now it works! What a headache!

By the way, for any future references, this motherboard was a PCChips M748MR. Hope this also helps somebody else.
