I get this error in my Access 2000 when trying to compact and repair...the DB is 400 000kb+ but there is more than enough space on the disk...and I have had it up to 900 000kb at times with no problem...but now suddenly it throws this error...any ideas?

During a compact operation there should be enough disk space to store both the compacted and the original database. Is there enough space for both?

Dave

yup...I can see both the original and the new DB that is created....the error occurs and both DB's are left at the exact same size...

On what drive is your TEMP variable set? How much space is free on that drive? Karl

Karl,

I've cleaned up the drive with the DB in qustion...I'm cleaning up my C drive as well just in case...

I'm short of de-fraging it...but that'll take a while...and I'm loathe to do it since I don't think it will achieve anything.

Extra space is all you need, not defragmentation (although that is a good idea, but for other reasons). My users get this error when their C drive gets too full (usually with junk in their root, or temp folder). Karl

KArl,

Much thanks, do you think this is the issue even if the DB is on a different drive? I just cleaned my C via 'Disk Cleanup' and there was a little bit of junk.

However my DB's are on 2 seperate drives...

I am offering that as a possible solution, as that has solved the problem for some of my users (and yes, their database was not on the C drive, but cleaning up junk files from the root (of C) and temp folder (on C) solved the problem). They usually find some big stranded file that unexpectedly chewed up a lot of space (delete and empty recycle bin). Although, the same problem could be caused by the gradual filling up of the drive. Karl

You could also try to split the db first, into Front End/ Back End (which it should be in anyway). Then Compact and repair them seperately.

Also move the dB to different drives and try it at each one. You never know what may work.

Sean.
