Hello,

I have a Dell 4100 P III 1 Ghz PC with 512 MB and running Win XP Pro. It came with 2 USB 1.0 ports somehow connected to the MB (not in a PCI slot). I wanted to add USB 2.0 capability, so I bought a PCI card with 4 Ext. and 1 internal port.

The new USB card and ports are recognized and installation is attempted. However they have have the yellow flag with the !-mark and the the following error message is displayed.

"device can not find enough feee resources that it can use (Code 12). If you want to use the device you need to diable one of the other devices"

I have a SCSI board that I no longer need, so I disbled it and even uninstalled the driver. The yellow symbols don't go away, and as soon as I restart the computer or scan for new devices, the SCSI board is detected and the same problem/message is present. I have not actually removed the board yet. Will that help?

How can I gain resources?

TIA

Try installing the card in a different location. This will connect it to different IRQs, and it may make everything work at once.

There's no such thing like "Enable IOAPIC mode" somewhere in your BIOS?

Garebo & Felixc,

SUCCESS!!!

I continued on as recommnded by Garebo and removed all boards and then put them in one at a time between reboots and with the USB 2 board right next to the Graphics board, which is in a non-PCI slot. I only have three boards, USB 2, sound, and NIC card.

PNP in BIOS is still on and Legacy USB 1 in BIOS is still disabled. Also the USB 1 device controller is still disabled from within Device Manager.

I wonder what would happen if I enabled it now? I won't be trying it, but if anyone has an opinion and a pretty good assurance that it won't throw me back to where I was, I would be happy to hear about it.

Felixc, as far as I can tell, I do not have the IOAPIC mode on my BIOS.

Finally I want to thank everyone who helpec me with this problem, This is not the first time I have gotten great help from the knowlwdgeable experts in this forum.

Thanks so much!

Time for a star? lol Not supposed to ask.
I am new here and only an amateur so i am really proud when i actually do help someone!

Thing is, i have been thru exactly what you went thru and it worked for me, thats why i mentioned it.

As for enabling usb 1.1 you may very well come out ok, or it could put you back where you started. I would try it, but thats me, lol. You can always start over and if it worked the first time, it will work again.
From experience such as you are having. I always put the usb card in first, after the agp slot, then sound if its not onboard, then any other stuff. Just learned that from other people here, other tech places, and my own experience.

Glad it worked for you!!

By the way, the reason, fas as my experience goes, is that some things like usb2.0 and sound like to have certain irq's and wont work without them and wont even share irq's.
While some items will take just about any irq and will share nicely.
Sound is actually the culprit far as i know. but when you take sound out and put usb2.0 in then put sound back in then sound decided it had to work together with the rest of the system. Thats been my experience, but there are tons of people here who know more about this stuff.
