Open up the resource monitor (Start>Programs>accessories>system tools) and let it run for a while. Then let us know what it states. Also What type of system, ie.. RAM amount, HDD space ect.. Also run System Monitor to indicate 'unused physical memory' as well as the default 'Kernel processor usage' and also do you have a custom virtual memory setting? if so, what is it? My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my knowledge. Andy.

i can't seem to find the resource or system monitor. under system tools i only have disk cleanup, defrag, converter, matinance wizard, scandisk, shedualed tasks, system info and welcome to windows. is it in one of these folders or can i find it elsewhere? is there a chance i don't have it at all?

thanks in advance
chris

It probebly is not installed. Go to add/remove software in the control panel. Go to add/remove windows components. And install the system resource monitor. Let us know if you need help. Clean out your temp directory under c:\windows\temp.
It often causes out of memory errors and other goofy(including printing) problems with Windows 9.x. I add 3 lines to the autoexec.bat file on the root of c drive on all my win9x computers.

deltree /y c:\windows\temp
cd\windows
md temp

This will clean up the temp files everytime you reboot your PC.

Good Luck!! A+ MCP

the system i am having trouble with is my old umax laptop with 233mmx, 32mb ram, 3 gig hard drive with 255mb free. i ran the system monitor that said my "physical memory available to windows" is 32,284 KB and that the system resources are 92% free. i ran the Kernel Processor Usage and nothing appeared to have happened. it ran through a chart for close to an hour then restarted the computer. i still can't find a resource monitor only a resource meter which states system resources 92% free, user resources 92% free and gdi resources 95% free, with the Kernal running. i don't know if i have a custom virtual memory setting, i don't ever remember doing one but if you let me know how to find out i will check. hope some of this might help.

thanks in advance
chris

For Virtual Memory go to:
Right click on MY COMPUTER then go to PROPERTIES. Next go to the PERFORMANCE tab. Then at the bottom click VIRTUAL MEMORY. But I suggest you do as DeanSpencer suggested in clearing out the TEMP folder. Also clear out the Temporary internet files as well (right click on INTERNET EXPLORER and go to PROPERTIES. Then on the front page is a button near the bottom CLEAR HISTORY. Click it. Also get rid of some programs that you no longer use.
