Having problems accessing some secure sites that require smart card logon. I have reinstalled ActivClient three times, uninstalled and reinstalled IE8, IE7 and still no progress. Some sites immediately prompt me for PIN others do not. Tried all of the KB articles, reset Internet Explorer, Internet Explorer no add-ons, FireFox, Chrome, Safari, all with the same results.

Looks like most of the sites I have tried require TLS I have tried toggling the advanced options with no luck.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Have you confirmed these site are compatible with the Smart card? If they haven't coded for it, it won't work.

I can't touch the website it is hosted by an outside source. Some sites work fine with the smart card some don't it is very odd.

Can you stop reposting the question (well spotted Linney), you can always bump an existing one by just adding a comment. You posted yet another one yesterday on the same topic, which has now been removed. Each one has missing or different info, so making it harder for anyone to help out.

Okay let me try to explain further.

Internet Explorer will prompt you for a smart card when you access certain sites but for some reason there are sites where it just goes straight to "Page Cannot Be Displayed" immediately without prompting for the smart card. WireShark shows the workstation hitting the URL and getting the information than it just stops communicating for some reason. I have tried all of the tricks re-registering all of the dlls, resetting IE, reloading the smart card software, removing all anti-virus, firewall, reloading service pack and IE. One other note it is 64-bit XP.

Thanks for your assistance.

Ah...I'm not sure with XP 64 bit, but I know W7 64 you have two versions of i.e. "Normal" and 64bit.

64bit has problems with many plugins and add ons.

Is there a 32 bit version?

XP 64-bit but I am using 32-bit IE and 32-bit Smart Card Software. I have tried using 64-bit IE and Smart Card software but still experience the same problem. I guess the only other alternative is to try to repair XP and see if that fixes the issue.

You mentioned firewalls, do you have a Router between you and the Internet that also has a firewall? If so have you tried temporarily disabling the Router firewall?

Does it make any difference if you test by adding one of these sites as a Trusted Site in IE?

Yes the firewall has been taken out of the equation and connected directly to the internet still no joy.

Have you also tried it with IE's "Protected Mode" disabled?

What does Internet Explorer protected mode do?

Internet Explorer protected mode is a feature that makes it more difficult for malicious software to be installed on your computer.

In addition to helping protect your computer from malicious software, protected mode allows you to install wanted ActiveX controls or add-ons when you are logged in as an administrator.

Protected mode is turned on by default in the Internet, Local intranet, and Restricted sites zones and an icon appears on the status bar to let you know that it's running.

Clicking on "Protected Mode" (just above and to the left of the Clock) will allow you to disable it, but remember to turn it back on.

Same issue with non protected mode. It acts if it is not even trying to get to the site immediately responds with "Page Cannot Be Displayed" no matter in protected mode or not.

Are any of these sites accessible from other machines?

Can you supply a couple of URL's to the sites you are trying to connect to?

Should a non Smartcard user at least be able to get to a Pin request page?

Is there any odd settings under the Proxy Settings of the browsers concerned?

No proxies are involved. Yes it works on some workstations and some don't there isn't a pattern some workstations with x64 work fine others don't. Some 32-bit work fine some don't. Yes a smartcard user should be prompted for a PIN but it doesn't even get that far starts the handshake process then bam "page cannot be displayed".

Do you get the same result via Safe Mode with Networking?

Have you tried the Winsock Fix?

This will lead you in to the possibility of corrupted Index.dat files.

Have you looked at the Hosts file as a cause?

Same result in safe mode, tried the winsock fix, and ensured no viruses or malware. Hosts file is okay and internet files have been removed. Looks like it is time to call Microsoft. Thanks

If you do get a solution let us know the result. All the best, and good luck with Microsoft.
