Not all machines are being detected using Network Discovery

Guys,

I am trying to detect client machines subnet by subnet using Network Discovery so that the clients can be installed at a later time. I have specified one subnet on the network and left the domain empty under Network Discovery. When checking All Systems in Collections not all the client desktops are not being detected. The ones that are being detected take a while to show up. The collection is being updated every 2 minutes.

I have also added a different domain to network discovery, and nothing is being picked up.

Is there something else I need to enable?

Appreciate any help.

Thanks,

What sp are you using?
Have you checked the subnet mask and verified it is correct, and do you have Windows Networking Logon Discovery enabled?

dpheat28,

Thanks for the response. I am using SP2. I do not have Network Logon Discovery enabled. The subnet mask is correct. It seems only the router is being discovered.
Is it possible to detect resources on just the subnet criterium, or does something else need to be enabled, i.e DHCP.

You MUST have Windows Network Logon Discovery enabled for any detection to work. When you enable this it finds all domain controllers and makes them logon points, which until you have logon points, nothing will be discovered. Routers do not need this, which is why you are able to find them.
I would also recommend upgrading to SP3, in my experience it makes SMS run much faster.

dpheat28,

I specified a DHCP server address in the DHCP tab. I did not enable the Windows Network Logon Discovery. Within a matter of minutes, all resources with IPs given by the DHCP server showed up in the All Systems collection.

This SMS s/w is quite tricky. Do you know of any good resouces that deals with SMS2.0?

I will look into SP3 (time permitting). Are there any drawbacks from installing SP3?

Thanks,
