just seems to always boot back to the original file and not the one i just tftp'd up. could it be that this router requires additional ram to support this ios?

file that i tftp'd to flash was
c181x-adventerprisek9-mz.151-4.M3.bin

You need to tell the router to use that file to boot from....

By default if there is no boot string set it will boot from the 1st bootable file in flash. You need to either delete the original IOS image (I wouldn't...) or tell the router to use the new image.

In configuration add the line:
Code:
boot system flash flash:/c181x-adventerprisek9-mz.151-4.M3.bin
If the flash is referenced differently then modify the path in the string (boot system flash slot0:/... etc). Obviously save the configuration before you reboot it...

Andy

Is the / [slash] required in that command? Because if not that's what I have done with the exception of the slash in the beginning of the file name. Then I did a reload - confirm the save and confirmed the reload and sho ver shows that I'm back at the original 12.3 level from 2005.

Maybe I should send a fresh bin up again and try again?

Watch it boot from the console and see what it complains about. It could be the config register - post the output of show version.

From my lowly 877 this is what I have configured:
Code:
boot system flash flash:/c870-advipservicesk9-mz.151-4.M5.bin
It shouldn't be any different on any other router apart from the path and the filename. If the config register is wrong it may be ignoring the boot string.

My laptop was blue screening from my usb/serial cable so i wasn't able to see any errors on boot, in any case...

Yep. Those USB things are truly a menace.

Get yourself a laptop with a serial port. Well worth having.

boot: unsupported boot device "c181x-adventerprisek9-mz.151-4.M3.bin"

It looks like the boot string is configured wrong. It says:
Code:
System image file is "flash:c181x-adventerprisek9-mz.050620"
I assume because it has ignored the wrong string setting.

In your configuration what does the boot string say?

It should read somelike:
Code:
boot system flash flash:/c181x-adventerprisek9-mz.151-4.M3.bin
