I just starting out on a home network using a standalone w2k server and a winxp workstation. To start things out I wanted to ensure the computers can talk to them to each other before proceeding further. They are both using static ip addresses and the win2k server can ping the xp machine but the xp machine can not ping the server. For now the two are connected thru a simple hub.

The server is freshly installed and I am wondering if XP has something that might be scrrewed up!

There are no h/w conflicts What gives?
Thank you

What are the IP addresses of the two machines? Subnet masks? Do you have an internet connection? If so, can you ping to domains or external IPs? How about DNS settings? With a little more information, I'm sure we'll be able to track down the problem, but without it, all hope is lost...8)

if you can ping one way but not the other, I'd suggest you may have a firewall turned on.

but if you're in doubt, run "cmd.exe" and type "ipconfig /all" on each machine; copy and paste the results here.

I am sorry for the vagueness.

Server
IP = 192.168.1.1
submask = 255.255.255.0
no DNS currently set

xp workstation
IP = 192.168.1.2
submask = 255.255.255.0

DHCP is installed but no scope yet.
No DNS configured

In future I will eventually use Routing and Remote access on my server to act as the gateway for the Internet so I can access Internet from xp box.

The firewall was disabled on both machines.

Hope this helps. Thank you very much

Some firewalls even if disabled are still active. Use Task Manager to see if the firewall engine is still running.

Check that your antivirus software does not include a firewall component. PC-Illan is one that does and will block the ping.

If anything is "screwing" up here it is the Win2k server, as it is the one that from your description cannot be pinged. If I were you I would take the steps outlined above and then proceed with your network plans. I think the server will be happier when you complete the installation of all of its services.

Are you pinging by name or IP address?

If these are fresh installs, and any firewalls are definately[/y] turned off, I cannot see why you would be able to ping one way but not the other (when you're pinging by IP address).

Thank you all. In fact it was the firewall engine still running as a service in task manager. All is ok now. Firewalls can either be friend or foe at time....lol

Very true, and quite often they work more on the "foe" side, than the "friend" side. Glad to hear everything is now working.
