When I open a doc that is being used by another user word 97 will not allow me to create a copy and just gives me an error message asking to check several things.

any one know how to solve this??

Any help more than welcome..

Marzy.

What is the error message exactly?
Are you opening from a server?

I am opening the document up from a network location.

The error message is:

word cannot open the document,
try one of the following:
on the file menu, click open to open the document
make sure the document has a .DOC extension
(then the file location)

Is this happening to the same document all the time? Is anyone else having problems? Does it have a .doc extension?
Can you access other files on the same drive?

the problem happens on any document I try and open that is being used by another user.

All the docs have the correct extension.

This is the only person in the office that has the problem.

Is this maybe a security issue?

Can you right click on the file > properties > security and see if this user has permissions to access the file?

Yes the user has the appropriate permissions to view the files.

the user can open the docs fine when no one else is using them..
