Im working, thank God...but my concern is that I was hired to maintain two option 11c's (offsite) and help the other techs with thier MAC orders on a CS 100 ( thnk thats what it is) that they have here onsite when I dont have any tickets of my own. Today, I was told that I may have to maintain an option 81c (offsite) that may come in February. Im a contractor and I was wondering, should I ask if there is going to be a pay increase if I do have to maintain this Option 81c?

I really dont know any specs like, how many users or anything like that...what i do know is that the contract to maintain that switch is over in February. SO, what would YOU be asking about compensation? or do U even ask and just take the workload?

I am currently managing 4 Opt11s and was just asked to install and maintain a 5th. All of these are offsite except 1. I mostly just take the workload without asking, because there isnt much maintenance to do on these. Mostly just name changes and VM reset. If you decide to ask, i would base compensation on a percentage. If you spend a lot of time with the new systems i might insist on 5-10% of your current salary. This should make it sound more fair as opposed to a flat 10K increase.

also, if possible, i would see if the other company could front the increase. this may be more likely to happen as they can charge it back as "PBX maintenance/changes" as opposed to an additional personnel salary. this is the situation for one of my sites that i will pursue in January when our support agreement is set to expire.

More work is not more pay. 2 Option 11's is far from full time.

More expertise, responsibility, risk, decision making, leadership, etc - that is more pay.

If you are confident you are the best person for the job, and you've been doing it a long time, ask it this way: "What do I need to do to reach the next salary grade" - and see what they say. They might tell you.

Tanks for the replys - i appreciate it much... i understand that two pbx switches is not alot of work, i also am instructed to learn and do MAC orders on the swtich that is here at this site. I dont mind cuz its a learning opportunity. I have had experience on working on an option 81c and there was alot of maintenece that i had to do, after hours - im salary so this is why I want to get some advice oh how to approach this deal. I dont mind the work, just wanna make sure im not gettin short changed.

My thoughts are this. You said you were a contractor. I assume your contract is for 8 hours a day. Seems to me if they ask you to sweep the floor then by all means, sweep the floor.

Lol, yes sir - u got it !! I understand ur thoughts.. thanks for all of the replys, i appreciate them. :)

you can only do so much in 8 hrs, if the workload exceeds that (due to the added system) then unless they are willing to pay for 9 or 10 hrs, stick to what can be done in those 8 hrs.

I agree with GHTROUT and MIKEARCADE - yes it is more work does not equal more pay but the extra site will lead to extra risk/decision making/responsibility and possibly more after hours/travel work which should equal more pay and even title change to the next level. Take notes like MA suggests to see how much 'extra' work it might be. Sure it might be more initially but may slow down quickly or it might ramp up depening on what is needed in the near term.
I am the engineer for a Geo-Redundant 7.5, a SMG, and two disparate Siemens PBXs from 1995 that we need to migrate to our 7.5 system - fun soon ahead :) Of course on call 24x7 but at least we have excellent vendor support.
