Norton's System Check Problem

I have run this program numerous times and it always says that their are disk integrety problems on C & D. I then run Norton's Disk Dotor on both drives & no errors are found on either one. This has been going on for a couple of weeks and I finally had to disregard the message on System Check. This is a stop gap fix and I need to know what to do next. Either the errors are there and NSC is correct and NDD is incorrect or vice-versa. I am running Norton SystemWorks 2000 Professional Edition, version 3.0 on Windows 98 SE
What makes me believe that the error lies with System Check is that drive D is not being used at the present time because I am about to install a larger drive and I don't want to have to move any files that were previously using it.

Is drive D a physical or a logical drive? If the former, try disconnecting the ribbon cable and remove it from the BIOS. If the latter, (you told us it was not being used) then delete the partition. Does this make any difference to your problem? Does running SCANDISK find any errors?

ROGER - GØAOZ.

Yes, Roger. D drive is physical & very small in size. It's not partitioned, only FAT 32. The C drive is where Norton's is installed. It's a little larger, not partitioned and is also a FAT 32 drive. C is where Windows is installed also all my other programs including Norton's. I do not use Scan Disk because of the length of time it takes to run and I believe NDD is a better program.

The problem started about a week ago. I have been running Norton's System Check, Disk Doctor and Win Doctor regularly, almost every day. All of a sudden those messages appeared. Something is wrong with Norton's and not my hard drives. I merely want to determine,do I or do I not have a disk integrety problem on either drive.

Anymore suggestions? I assure you that your help is appreciated.

Hi Duchess

Yes, you ought to run SCANDISK. Unless your drive is huge or you have zillions of files, it ought not to take a long time. Boot into Windows holding down the lefthand shift key (this stops progs loading in the STARTUP group), and then switch OFF all power saving and the screen saver. Delete .TMP .BAK and temporary internet files (.GIF & .JPG), and then run SCANDISK.

Good luck!

ROGER - GØAOZ.

Thank you both Kento and GOAOZ.

I neglected to mention that when I was advised of the problem, the very first time and ran NDD, the problem wasn't fixed because it found no errors. Then I ran Windows ScanDisk and it too found no errors. But, i will run it again and fixed or not, I will return here and let you both know if the problem is fixed. If it is not, then I will do the second suggestion from Kento and post my problem on Sysmant's Discussion Board.

Do either of you think that installing SystemWorks over itself, might resolve this issue?

Thanks for all your help so far, and like McArthur, I will return.

Adios Amigos.

Hi Duchess

Norton System Doctor Displays an "Errors on Drive" Message, but Norton Disk Doctor Finds no ...
Norton System Doctor reports that a particular drive has errors. However, when you run Norton Disk Doctor, it finds no errors. The Disk Health sensor may turn green for a while, but it soon turns back to red, repeating the error message.

Is this whats happening?

You are correct Smitee, that is what happens, only I don't use the Disk Health Sensor (I've been told it uses to much System Resources). I get the message when System Check is run.

I tried to use the link you sent but I get only a page with Symantec Knowledge Base Service & Support in the upper left hand corner of the page but no text in the body. I clicked Refresh but no cigar.

Is there another way to reach the article? If you know of a possible solution, I would be very happy to try it.

Thanks for your interest and for your future help.

Hi Smitee, that last URL worked perfectly and the problem it covers is mine exactly. There is one slight problem with the solution it gives, I know zilch about DOS, having cut my eyeteeth on Windows 95. I always get Bad Command Or File Name when I try to use it. Could I dare to ask if you could advise me on what to type at the DOS prompt?

I never knew that I would need a baby sitter using this thing called a computer (smile).

I welcome assistance from all members on this form. Please assist me when i give unsound advice...Thanks

Hi Duchess

Without trying to hurt your feelings, may I ask why you haven't considered the "longterm" solution to your problem. In your original post you indicate that it has been going on for some time.
Unfortunately you have purchased applications from a reputable vendor which do not work well together. The vendor has now provided a solution that may, or may not work..ie "Here are some 'suggestions' as to how to solve the problem". Further, the suggestions are essentially simple, but not really remedial. They are as follows:

PERFORM A SURFACE TEST........The results of this fairly lengthy process are informative but in the end they "fix" nothing. A failed test here simply means your media will not reproduce upon a read what was written. You now have an additional problem commonly known as "my drive has bad sectors". A passed test indicates your device can write data and read it back as written anywhere on your drive. Notice that on this test, the only good comes from a failure, it gives you more information. A passed test gives you assurance.

RUN SPEED DISK....This really another way of saying "defragment the disk" and rearrange file s optimally for the fastest and most reliable access by the "read/write" mechanism. Also place the files on the drive in such a manner so that future fragmentation possibilities are minimized, and to free large contiguous areas for new writes. Norton says the NSD does this better than NDD. <<<<<<--I believe this "difference" triggers your "cuurent" error message. There is a distinct possibility that a permanent reconcilliation between NSD and NDD is not possible.

RUN IMAGE
Again the wording "try creating an Image of all your drives" promises no remedy. If you succeed, fine, your drive has been imaged. If test fails, you will receive an error. You are already there, you are receiving errors.

ADD A SMART SENSOR TO SYSTEM DOCTOR
You have indicated that this is not an option.

My (two cents worth)

Scandisk is produced by Symantec (Norton). It has the blessing of Microsoft. They ship it with the OS. NDD is an enhanced version of this product. Keep them.
SystemWorks' compatibilty is tenuous. Repackage the product, remove it from your system, and advertise it for sale on E-Bay.
It takes space on your drive, ties up memory and resources you could channel into better uses, slows down boot process, complicates troubleshooting, and is at the "root" of your problem.
If you cannot bring yourself to do this I would at the very least "demand" some of Symantec's support. I can offer you none.

Now, how to get to DOS and move to a directory where NDD.exe can be executed.
(I am assuming NDD.exe is in C:\Program Files\Norton Utilities)

Restart....After system hardware test, screen will go blank, immediately press and release F8 key repeatedly until "Microsoft Windows 95 Startup Menu" appears

You want to select "Command prompt only", choose number 6. Highlight it and tap[enter]
You now are at the C:\> prompt level
Type CD Progra~1[enter]
You are now in the C:\Program Files directory
Type CD Norton~1[enter]
You are now in the C:\Program Files\Norton Utilities directory
Type NDD.exe[enter]

This should bring up Norton Window from which you can make your selections....

Any problems please post back.

Thank you Smitee. This is what I've done with the information you sent me.

I shut down and restarted computer with Norton's Emergency Disk 1 in my A drive. It told me to insert Disk 2. Chosse surface test and ran NDD (only A & C drives were listed, no mention of my D hard drive), I choose C drive and let it scan the Entire Disk area. The results were NO PROBLEMS DETECTED ON DRIVE C. The Emergency Disk made no mention of using Speed Disk so I let the computer reboot and ran SD. When it finished, I ran System Check and guess what? It said No Error Found. I hope that solved the problem, I will let it run again (it's setup to suto run at a certain time), and I hope that particular error doesn't appear again.

So far so good and I thank you for the Norton Utilities 3.0 article from the Symantec Knowledge Base. If the problem is fixed, I will close this thread, if not, I will return.

Thanks again.

Hi again Smittee,
The problem has returned, nothings changed. The delete and reinstall didn't help.

What can you suggest. I am ready to throw Norton's in the trash.

Duchess

I will happily bow out at this stage primarily because I cannot offer any more advice. I would hope that some of the more experienced core group following this thread can help you further. Thanks for the opportunity to offer advice but I'm not up to it. Good Luck Duchess..

Regards

Smitee

Hi Smittee,

I thank you for all the suggestions on how to fix my problem. I too have given up. I unckecked the option to let System Check check for Disk Errors and will run NDD often. I do like all the tools probided by SystemWorks 2000 and I even gone so far as to upgrade to System Works 2002. I have not installed it yet but I intend to. If the problem resurfaces with the upgrade, I will be entitled to telephone tech. support.

I thank you again and I consider this thread closed. Of course, I will give you the highest rating possible.

Goodby and God Bless.
