I just installed Norton Antivirus and personal firewall 2004, but when I double click on the executable to run them, they don't work. It acts like it's going to load (the hourglass comes up), but nothing happens. I've reinstalled, to no avail. Symantec's tech support is worthless. The only thing I can think is to reload the OS and try again, but I really don't want to do that. Absolutely baflling. It's Windows 98, hardware is a Compaq P3 500, 256 MB RAM. Thanks.

These are remote possibilities, but:
1) did you have another antivirus such as mcafee on system before installing norton? If so, it may not have gotten completely uninstalled and be making conflicts for you.

2) have you tried just antivirus w/o firewall to see if there may be conflicts between the two applications?

To answer your question:

No other antivirus software.

Have tried installing both independently, with the same results everytime.

I am running both Norton AV and Firewall. I was running Norton AV 2001 with updates. I added Firewall and then installed Norton AV 2004 Upgrade. On installing the upgrade I had to remove Norton AV 2001 before proceeding. I haven't had your problem.

How are you are editing your registry? Even though you have removed them there are stiil traces left. Have a look on the Synmantec site about removal of their products from the registry.

Then do the re-install.

Just a thought, have you bought the right product, You haven't bought an upgrade instead of the full addition, by any chance?

Just read in a magazine that Norton have added activation codes to 2004?

Is this correct?

Might explain why it doesn't work!

A magnificent backward step if they have.

Correct, Zeitghost, I had to "activate" the product. It gave me a year's free upgrades. I think they did it because they found out that were losing money on the old Norton AV because if you uninstalled and then reinstalled it you were able to have a further free year!!

Turns out Symantec's site isn't so worthless after all...

Had to restore default value and activate product, after that, it was smooth sailing...
...until...

Norton Personal Firewall is still not working. And, to top it all off, now when Internet Explorer or Word starts up, they create all new desktop icons of themselves. So now I've got all sorts of shortcuts to word and IE that I don't need. Gotta love windows...

Here's the corresponding page for Norton Firewall:

"Cannot start Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall 2004 after installation"

HTH, but personally I find a firewall is all but redundant behind a decent ADSL modem/router, though I still have Zone alarm active.

Test your firewall with Shields Up! at .
